Right all, Ive decided that the English fleet needs updating, well adding too more than anything. I have my V8 XJ300, V8 Discovery, and I wouldn't mind something a little better on fuel, with ability to tow the caravan (1700kgs).

The diesel auto jag seem's to tick every box, around 4k im seeing some nice examples too. Anything I really should watch out for?

I have a 2006 model and am very pleased with it. Good power, good economy and decent carrying capacity too. Quiet and comfy, lovely 'proper Jag' interior. Hit 'resume' after a roundabout and not much keeps up with you.

It has one alarming trick in very cold weather - the diesel-fired heater under the bonnet can send clouds of smoke billowing from the wheel arch giving an excellent impression of a car on fire - but it dissipates as it warms up.

Buy a late example with FSH and you should do well.

I love mine in the gaps between the bills, go for as low a mileage as possible, preferably having had the cambelt changed already, from my experience I would also want to see a great big pile of receipts as well as stamps in the book.

Also look out for uneven tyre wear, suspension clonks, and funny noises from the gearbox on kick down.

make sure it gets up to temperature and stays there, it's virtually impossible to get a thermostat at the moment.

check both sides of the climate control work (hot and cold) and it moves between the screen/vents/feet.

make sure the headlights point the right way, and if you have HID's that they swing up and down when you start the car.

NAV is nice, but not a deal breaker, I have it and tend not to use it anyway, maps only available upto 2012.

Brilliant guys, thank you ever so much. Ive been looking around 90-110k mileage wise, im not scared of a few miles. I have a full workshop of lads who will keep it maintained for me, but the little bits are all handy.

One thing I do remember from my 03 plate 3.0. It had full leather, but no heated seats. Is this common?

I had a 55 plate sport auto as a company car. It must have been the first year with dpf as it had straight exhausts and all the rest had turn downs. Wonderful car to sit in and drive did 50k (8 months)then the problems began, turbos replaced twice under warranty, ecu twice and they never did fix it properly. Car kept going into limp mode if you went into kickdown say coming out of a roundabout, and in limp mode you had no boost so it was dangerous even pulling out from a junction. When it had been in about the 6th time they told me they couldn`t even diagnose the issue properly and guys were coming down from jaguar to diagnose it ( I had already tried 2 dealers) they replaced most of the ancillaries again which suggests they couldn`t diagnose it either when I picked it up we went out for a drive with the 2 guys and with them driving it did it again after 30 miles of admittedly spirited driving. They were both embarrassed and baffled .
In 8 months it had failed 8 times and I had been given a very nice loan of a Range Rover for a month or so . They said to keep the RR for a time and they would return the car to the factory for investigation, after another month the fleet manager rang and said they were taking the car back so I could order a new car .
The jag was wonderful to sit in comfortable and very well equipped and economical too, stable at speed and a brilliant cruiser we went to Barcelona twice in the time I had that car driving through France nothing was ever that comfortable again. GK55GFK has disappeared off the database now I wonder where it ended up?

Having said all that I would now love a v8 as a private car as it really was amazingly comfortable. They probably have the diesels sorted now but I would bee it as a big risk as a private buyer.

I've enjoyed the last 2 years, but I wouldn't have another one...

My neighbour has had no end of grief with his XF too, which is kind of putting me off jaguars in general, which is a shame as it's a lovely place to sit.

Ahhh these horror stories worry me a little. I love my jags. I had a lovely XJ40 4.0 Sport, and accidentally this weekend purchased a 3.2 XJ Executive, 96P with 68k. I just fancied having the luxury of another jag for a daily with sensible economy. Hmm

I so feel your pain ! Oh forgot to say that the cold morning heater thing is a joke too I couldnt even see out of my car looking left when turning right at the end of the road as the exhaust is under the passenger side at the front very dangerous and agin 2 dealerships said nothing they can do it is just like it!

Go for the V8 it could well be cheaper to buy stick LPG on it and just enjoy , My next family hack car I hope !

I have a V8 Discovery on LPG, Straight 6 XJ, 4 Pot Turbo Forester, and a couple of other toys. I really need an oil burner, it makes sence with my commute to be, and towing uses.

Mine is an 07 Spirit Auto, so slightly basic trim etc. 99k on the clock now and I love it to bits. The only thing I would change it for is possibly an S-Type R.

There's some well-known stuff needs doing to prolong its active life.
Gearbox oil change (& filter pan/sump) at 60-80k. Expensive oil is a must, apparently, so budget on c.£400.

Suspension bushes wear out - 80k fronts, 100k rears; contrary to what Jaguar say, all bushes except one front (which doesn't wear anyway) are available individually at reasonable cost.

Low battery voltage causes all kinds of spurious gremlins; I can now predict when mine will go into limp mode- after I have moved it off/around the drive a couple of times without a run to recharge. Next trip will be limp mode for first two miles until a restart.

Some have had problems with EGR valves sticking; mine is almost always used for runs of >20 miles but I won't tempt fate by finishing the sentence...

Some say they are heavy on brake pads - mines done >40k on the last set and they're still OK.

Many >07 models have premature diff bearing failure, mine is on it's third diff (under warranty, fortunately), now fine.

A Quantum remap gives a decent improvement in overtaking urge - & IMO is the way it should have left the factory - and no penalty to mpg; mine returned 42mpg wafting through France & Italy at 130kph to the Mille Miglia, but feels quicker than my 330d was.

It is an almost-silent, wafting, wonderful handling bit of kit with few vices - it is the longest I have ever owned a car!

any car of this standard will cost money to maintain. Jaguars are not immune to breakdowns and other marques suffer the same if not well maintained. I have had 4 XJS's an XJ Sport an S type and now a XKR and they have been as reliable as other cars I have owned if you buy a second hand car which is now 7 years old or more than you can expect niggles
