Problems with series 2 xj6

Help! Ignition light is staying in all of a sudden. Battery seems to be charging fine according to the gauge. Light gets brighter when I Rev the engine and nearly goes out in idle. Hoping to God it's not the alternator. At the same time the screen wash has stopped working and I'm getting a lot of noise off the power steering belt on full lock and at the low speeds. Can any of these things be connected?
ignition light means its not charging or not holding the charge. Is the battery holding a charge? 14v remember. Older ones don't like winter, and lots of winter starts often kills batteries (well, the ones I've had have done this). I had a 944 with a 90s immobiliser which went through one battery every winter.
might just be the brushes on the alternator which need replacing, as they do wear out. Much cheaper..

If it's an early Series 2 it will have a control diode for the warning light. That can go faulty but the alternator will still charge. The control unit on the alternator can be replaced without changing the whole alternator.J
