Hi Guys,

Just purchased a Series 3 E Type V12 convertible. Its a US import that comes with Jaguar Heritage Certificate. It has matching numbers and colours inside and out all match with the certificate. It requires respray and new interior. My question is. If I change the colour of the interior will this invalidate the Certificate or is it better to stay with the original colours for value and Certificate's sake

It's yours, enjoy it how you want to. If another owner in the future wants to go back to the original colour then that's up to them. I know those colours were very in back during the 70s but that yellow wouldn't be my first choice and I suspect from the question it wouldn't be your favourite either. There are lots of colours that, IMHO, look better on an E-Type.
You won't invalidate your certificate which is really just confirming things from the factory build records. They won't tell you the "numbers" they'll just confirm whether numbers you give them match the factories records, but they always give the colour combinations from the records. As to value, there are those who want the original colour, but I suspect there more people who'd those another colour.
My apologies if you carefully chose that E-Type because it was the colour you like best.

I quite like the outside colour. It was the inside I was thinking about changing to black. Too much work to have a colour change and costly. However, there are other colours for E Types that I like too, but the ones I saw in the past had issues from rust which needed addressing. I was lucky enough to get this one with absolutely zero rust and all the running gear and everything else you can see under the car, inc gearbox and rack, is brand new. So I guess any colour would have been welcome on this car.

Thanks for your advice. Too many get hung up on these issues so just needed to feel it out.

I think that you have done well, that looks like a beauty.

Personally, I love the primrose yellow on the E, and the S3 would always be the pick of the bunch for me. There is an inverted macho quality about it.

I can understand your desire to change from blue to black - I had a red one very similar - which had a blue interior. What may be irritating you is the fact you have a blue seats and doors, and a black dash and steering wheel. There are plenty of people who do trim work - you could try Allon White the Morgan dealer - they also do interiors. Gradually however I have to say it ceased to bother me and there is something nice about having it original.

The one thing I would be inclined to do is paint the hardtop - a great asset, the same colour as the car. Just an idea.

Sadly I sold mine during the credit crunch and they are just too pricey for me now.

Hello Cardigankid

The interior is biscuit colour which is different from the usual yellow/blue. As the hard and soft top, and dash as you say, are black I think I will refurbish the interior in black. I actually saw a yellow with blue interior, including dash, and it looked a great combination.

As for the inverted macho issue you mentioned I couldn't agree more. There#s a dusky pink one on ebay and that stands out brilliantly. Not quite sure if I could drive it though but looks great.

Pity you had to sell yours but I got this from the States. Was lucky enough to meet up with a very trustworth guy who specialises in them, from barn finds to cars like mine. I got it for a bargain price, especially as its just had so much spent on the under side. Won't need to spend anything underneath for ever. This gut had a coupe in Dec that was similar conditionwise to mine and he would have let me have it for £15k. If you're interested I can let you know what he has if your ever in a position to be interested.

One things for sure, these are the type of car where it really doesn't matter what the colour is because everyone loves them

Pmail sent.

Don't mind a Coupe but prefer a Convertible. The colour you refer to is Heather. I have no issues at all with that. The S3 is the only one I fit in and imho the best looking of the lot. Stuff the 3.8 S1 Flat Floor - what you have is the business. Plus LHD doesn't worry me - I will use the car a lot in Germany where it is an asset. Manual is nice but Auto is fine.

If it were mine I would leave the biscuit as it is. The worn seats in mine weren't very supportive. If you are changing it why not take out and store the original seats and get a set of Recaros out of an old XKR and get them re trimmed in biscuit to match your door cards. Then you have the best of all worlds - All original equipment available and car a delight to drive. I totally loved driving around in mine on sunny days.

What I always intended but never achieved was to have the engine rebuilt by VSE or similar to achieve more potential.

I like that colour and I like original cars. however I think its more important to ensure that the quality of the work you have done is first rate.

Couldn't agree more. Thats the only way to restore a nice car but I think I will change the interior to black to match the rooves and dash.

Mechanical wise the best around is Mellor Motors of Glossop, Derbyshire. He cut his teeth in the industry on Jaguars of the 60-70's and knows these inside out. John Mellor has specialised in 60/70/80's marques including Rolls Royce, Bently and many more that are now fast becoming Classics, as well as being very competant on all cars classics or modern.

He has been my mechanic for 25 years and we are now in the throws of creating Mellor Classics and will offer top class work on these marques and in the very near future offering classic car sales. The first to arrive will be an Austin Healey 100/6 BN4 ex-show car from St Louis Car Museum which we are importing.
