Looking for my next toy and much as I like the F type, I do sometimes need an extra rear seat - even if the legroom is small.
I've been looking at a brand new unregistered XK at Chester, supposedly the last one made and the dealer is happy to certificate it as such.
I guess that there will be a replacement model at some stage.
So, should I consider new? Would it plummet in value as usual and should I look at an older s/h version.
Is there any reason at all why I should buy new?

A few months ago my dealer offered me a new dynamic R (coupe) for £60,600 - amazing car for that money. I declined only because I want a F Type R next.
New XK is still a couple of years away I suspect.
I don't think being the last off the line is going to add any value but people really seem to rate these cars even more now that production has ended. It's obviously not going to lose as much as a new one a couple of years ago would have.
I love mine and can't think of anything better for the money

Got a feeling that Jag Heritage might be getting the last one made, tis the norm
I would have expected that too - maybe the last one made that is being sold publicly?Great car to have whatever number off the line though, I'm not sure depreciation would be any worse than other cars as it should be available at a good price relative to the final list price anyway.
They were offering £20k off XKR's near to the end production, so if you get something like this, financing at 4.9% and a GMFV, then you will know exactly what you are getting into.
Personally, they are quite dated, so depends with your budget what else is out there and what tugs the ole heart strings. If it was me I would look for a mint XKR-S, which are now sub -£50k. Not that is a piece of kit....
Have you considered an XFR. £40k and a smile maker. Plus comfort for 5!

I was thinking the same, but there is a limit to what it is sensible to pay. The last of the current XK model is the Dynamic R. That comes with some of the trick suspension from the XKR-S including 10mm lower, electronic diff, active sports exhaust, Performance seats (without which I just wouldn't have an XK the standard ones are like something out of a 1958 Hillman). To my mind, it is the one to have. It is a delicious car.
It doesn't have the higher output engine, though 510 is hardly meagre, the 8-speed gearbox, weightier steering and the more sports oriented feel and handling of the F-Type. What it does have is the XK's undoubted stunning looks, and enough space for luggage, which is a serious shortcoming on the F.
Nevertheless, the XK was turned out in large numbers. Within a year or two we will be up to our armpits in cheap X150's. The fact it is a special is not going to exempt the Dynamic from this inevitable fate, and I would expect one of these to depreciate at circa £1500 per month for several years. It is a beautiful piece of kit but it is not an instant collectors item. It is also extremely thirsty, pretty high maintenance, and needs a secure heated garage.
There is talk about a new XK but this will be well down the line if ever. Rumours have it it may be a 4-door model, like the AM Rapide. Maybe, but surely that is what the XJ ought to be, so why? What they need is a slightly larger F Type, one you could actually go touring with.

New is nice, you are the only name in the logbook. Everything is perfect and anything that needs done happens under warranty, but as you say you are paying a premium for it.
How much of a premium is it worth paying when there are nice low mileage demonstrators available?
Reckon if I can't get the right XK I'll look at the new Mustang with the 5 Litre engine and manual gearbox. At £34k it puts this discussion into perspective.

Isn't it bigger than the XK!?
Wider, but shorter.Triple7 said:
Agree though, it is too small to be practical in a daily drive basis.

I did buy new, a Dynamic R in British Racing Green. The amount of attention I get is sometimes a little too much. People asking what it is, what an amazing colour & a couple of times photos being taken in the street. Due to the rare colour, wheels, black pack & body kit arguably it looks better than the RS. Regarding the cost I did a good deal & low finance with a £32k balloon after 4 years so depreciation is nowhere near the £1500 pm quote by a previous reply, more like half that figure & for a car with the power, V8 noise & looks that is £ well spent.
I won't argue with you, sounds like a truly beautiful car though I struggle to see it fetching that amount in 4 years time. I did say I would do a deal on one if offered the right price, and I didn't say that because I did'nt like them.
What about some pics?
[Maybe I will argue. It doesn't affect the fact it is a stunning car and I applaud your good taste.
List price £75k. Value once driven to the nearest set of traffic lights £55k. £1650 per month. Value two years old, sell or trade in, not that you will want to, 45k? 1250 per month. Value 3 years old £37k? 1050 per month. Value 4 years old imho £30k if you are lucky - I know that you can hand it back in but that could be interpreted as a delayed discount, plus of course the higher the balloon, the more interest you pay.
Of course, Value 40 years old, probably £150k if not more, but you need to be reeaaal patient.]

I wish that I could buy a car as a keeper but, sadly, as I drive off - I'm usually looking for my next car!
Must have wasted a fortune over the years...
After about 3 years with my XJ6 is started thinking it was time to change. Then after a stty Friday I climbed in stressed and 10 minutes later I was serenely sitting on my drive way at home smiling and feeling all was right with the world after all. I'd hit ever apex, breaking point ...etc perfectly on a short but twisty run home. Must have wasted a fortune over the years...
And I sat there thinking. OK, so why do you want to change the car?
In the end 2 thoughts struck me,
1) perhaps a little more torque would be nice occasionally, but it didn't seem a big enough issue to change for.
2) errr I think I'd been thinking of changing because I always had - habit really. I'd never owner a car for 3 years before.
All told this didn't seem like a good reason to change.
Was there anything else I wanted more? no not really well at least not in a practical way.
So here I am still with the car after 18 and a half years. OK, I've acquired so more as well, but I've still got the X300 and still drive her more than either my XK150 or my X150. That said, the sky is blue even if its cold so the convertible will come out this afternoon. Somethings you just have to do.
