Hello all,
I'm slowly getting closer to owning a XFR, but i'm stuck with trying to choose an after sales warranty.
I cannot find a XFR that meets my criteria from the approved used list (within my price range) and this would be my first choice for purchase, but i have seen some stunning examples from private dealers.
Unfortunately the dealers only offer warranties that are very limited, compared to the one offered by Jaguar
Unless i purchase a XFR from Jaguar, is there way to obtain a Jaguar warranty?
Or is there a very good alternative (apart from putting cash away every month)?

You can stick a Jaguar Warranty on the car, it just needs to go through the Jag inspection.

If you see a car you want and will buy, then why not suggest that the supplying dealer pays the inspection & you pay the extra for the warranty.

If it fails the inspection and requires a huge amount of expensive work, then walk away as you would any car, but make this clear from the outset. If they don't play ball, walk anyway.

If I'm honest, just hide you time. It can take a while to find your perfect car from a franchise dealer, so it pays to be patient.

Happy hunting, March reg change should free up some stock soon.

Ooh, i forgot about the March change over, I'm sure it will be a time when the dealers are trying to clear the forecourt.

This may sound like a silly question, but what sort of XFR-specific issues would you expect a warranty to cover which you couldn't cover yourself with financial discipline which it sounds like you have? smile

It would only be something like a grenaded engine (which the 5.0 Gen III AJ-V8 does not have a reputation for) that would make a warranty worth having versus just putting the warranty money aside and calling upon it to change the odd suspension bush or to get the DAB radio sorted etc. Even then, most aftermarket warranties have fairly unhelpful caps on the maximum payout per claim so if you were unlucky enough to have the freak event that made a warranty worthwhile, you'll probably still end up paying much of the bill anyhow.

If you're planning on using a main dealer for repairs (and some aftermarket warranties will cover this) then the warranty is worth having IMHO. Even relatively inexpensive parts can end up with a big bill if it takes a few hours to change.

I'd personally say hold out for an approved-used car with the official approved warranty, I did with my XKR and it was worth it. Either that, or as Jamie wisely says, do research, go into it with eyes open and maybe find a good independent specialist.

As above though, modern Jaguar engines are not known for unreliability. Good luck and post pics when you finally find yours.

Getting an approved used Jag is worthwhile - my XJR had something like £5k worth of warranty work in the first year of my ownership. But getting the extended warranty which is the one you can buy from Jaguar is pointless. When my approved used warranty expired after a year I took the option to purchase the Jaguar extended warranty which I quickly discovered covers pretty much nothing really and it costs a fortune to buy.

So I wouldnt recommend buying a used Jag then buying an extended Jag warranty, the only one worth having is that 1 year approved used warranty that you only get if you buy from a jag dealer.

Do you remember / be willing to divulge roughly how much the extended warranty was? I imagine it will change model to model but as an indicator..

I think it was about £1400 - it includes Jaguar assist BUT I was advised by the Jag dealer to never use Jaguar Assist but get AA/RAC instead.

ETA: I thought it was good value at the time as I'd already had £5k of warranty work, but I didnt realise there was a big difference between the approved used vs Extended warranty. I assumed they were the the same. They are not.

Thanks Dodsy, i thought they were the same thing too, hence why i was asking.
But if that's the case, then i may just save myself the hassle of trying to purchase from approved jaguar, and find a better spec one from an indy.

Perhaps my experience with the Jaguar warranty will help.

My previous S-Type V8 4.2 SE I bought with 14 miles on it and had it for 10 years. Obviously, it had a Jaguar warranty when I purchased the car. I then extended the same warranty for each of the next 6 years..not possible to do so after getting to 100,000 miles. The annual cost rose each year; I think it started at around £900 and ended up at around £1100.

I insisted on getting the Jaguar warranty and would not be fobbed of with anything inferior and always "won" the argument.

Was it worth it? No doubt it was.

Since June 2014 I've had an XF 5.0 V8 Portfolio, 5 years old, 31,000 miles, bought from a JMD. I insisted on it coming with a Jaguar warranty which was agreed. I have checked this thoroughly and it looks to be the real deal...anyway, I think a Jaguar approved car always comes with a Jaguar warranty. I don't know the cost of doing so but I will consider renewing this warranty next June.

Some extra info from me that makes a material difference, the mileage on my car is now 73k. I had a rear bush fail at 58k but the dealer and warranty company decided it hadnt failed enough yet so wouldnt replace it.

Roll on to the next time it was in for some work and lo and behold the bush has now failed and needs to be replaced. But as the car has done >60k miles its no longer covered even though its an 'up to 100k miles' warranty. The mileage on the car when they refused to fix it ? 600008 miles. Yes it was 8 miles over.

I had a long discussion with the dealer, the warranty company and Jaguar but bottom line is once its gone past 60k miles anything that goes wrong is considered wear and tear unless the engine explodes - and even then they told me they would only cover part of any cost due to the mileage,

The warranty is not backed by Jaguar but by a 3rd party and Jag customer services will have nothing to do with any warranty claims, they pretty much told me 'tough luck' when I talked to them about this, Their view is that I had chosen to take out a 3rd party warranty and therefore any issues had to be taken up with the warranty company and were nothiong to do with Jaguar. This is on an official Jaguar branded extended warranty bought from a Jaguar Dealer. I had no idea it wasnt actually being backed by Jaguar until I had this problem.

Perhaps I used a good JMD!

Maybe things have changed recently - this was 2 months ago and the dealer were happy to do the work but the warranty company said no. I had long discussions with the warranty company and Jaguar customer service , both told me that after 60k miles thats it. I wish I had known that when I took it out as it was on 55k miles at the time !

Just bought my wife a Merc and their approved warranty is full of get out clauses as well so I think in future I'll just stick the money in the bank.

my neighbour has an XF with a Jag warranty, the only things that have failed have not been covered, to say he has been less than impressed with the jaguar dealer experience is putting it mildly. Still loves the car though.
