XK8/R Waiting lists in early days
Discussion
Hi,
Does anyone have an idea of the size of the waiting lists (if any) on the launch of the XK8/R back in 1996?
My reason for asking is that currently the XK's sit at around 50% retained value after 3yrs. This is compared to around 70% for 911's and probably 90% for the new AMV8 when it arrives!
I wanted to know whether the new XK out next year, will see the same 50% depreciation, or whether you will see it holding value like a porsche, due to waiting lists for new ones?

But if buying the new Jag, I would hope that lots of people want it hence creating more demand than supply, hence waiting lists, hence very good residuals whilst the production catches up. I imagine this must have been the case early on in the current XK8's days, but need to find out from a dealer I guess.
I dont really want to shell out £70k for a Jag and it only be worth £35k in 3yrs, when I could spend the same on the Aston and it be worth £65k after 3 years, due to their still being people desperately wanting one.

My XK100 booked at £70k when new just under 3 years ago, I just picked it up for less than half price that price! As for the AMV8, like already mentioned, you won't get a sniff of one for ages.
You can put a deposit on the new XK right now. They will be more 'massed produced' so will not retain there value as well, but lets face 50% deprecition is pretty good on a car. I mean for the same money as my Jag I could only get a 5-6 year 996, but no way would I want one. Jags are the biz!
Why would anyone seriously want to blow £13k on VAT just to drive it out of a dealership, beats me. By a nearly new, you'll still get a used 'new shape' XKR before an AMV*.

......there was a discussion a while back on the Aston forum. Seems the correct procedure was for the dealer to ask for a "letter of intent". They would then ask for the £5k deposit once the car was "official" and the order books were open. Seems not all dealers took that route though
Still, for me the XK8/R will be the second best car of 2005 (that'll be the AM V8 Vantage then ).
Still, I'd quite happily settle for second best (especially an R in metallic BRG with black leather and 20" rims)

I wouldnt be so certain about values on a Porsche. I have a Porsche and participate in a number of Porsche Forums and you would be amazed at the tales of trade in's that people tell.
For example a member who bought a £102K 911 Turbo Cab and had it values at £75K as a trade in at an Official Porsche dealer and if I remember correctly the car was less than 12 months old. He was weeping and in all honestly he was not alone.
People are also very worried that the RMS problems (Rear Main Seal) that affect the last n/a 911's and Boxster is still in evidence on the brand new 911. Although I am looking at the new Boxster at present I am also looking at similar priced alternatives.
Porsche ownership is not all rosy and there is a certain fear attached to it.
