What a great car, surely a future collectors item, along with the Silverstone limited edition.
Dont know if it's the photo's, but it looks like you have the milky wood syndrome which affected the 2001 MY cars, you can get this replaced/refinished under warranty.
That middle age comment was predictable, 10 years time we will have plenty of young admirers thrashing round in their 15 year old 500 quid XKs, perrish the thought.

All the best,
John

Thanks John,

Milky wood, do explain, I kinda like how it is? I've seen darker grey stained birds eye maple, is that how it should be?

The problem is usually seen on 2001 cars, can't realy tell too well from your pics, but the problem occured when the guy who sprays the lacquer retired and his replacement messed things up.
It's quite common and many have been fixed under warranty, much easier to spot on the walnut dash.
I have seen it on cars advertised on ebay many times,XJs and XKs usually 2001 cars, but the wood could have been produced in 2001 and fitted to your car later. You should check with the dealer as they know the problem and will fix it for you if it is indeed failing. Seem to remember it was something to do with basecoat not dry before topcoat applied.

Thanks John,

Been out to car and examined wood. It is pale, but the grain is crystal clear. I assume hand crafted veneers come in a variety of shades. Any links to problematic wood?

Its still got a few weeks of manufactuers original warranty left, before the extended warranty kicks in. So I will compile a list for when the salesman does his follow up call next week.

Any other known things I should take a look at and get down care of Jag? Second thoughts don't scare me

From ebay USA

See this one, mainly on gear lever surround and door switch surrounds..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4516816421&category=6276

also this one..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4516141236&category=6276

These are just two examples found in less than 5 minutes.

Might be reflections in your pics, but you say you have seen darker maple, may be just variations in the natural wood available. Can you see any darker areas towards the edge of the panels?, it looks slightly darker there.

Hope yours is not affected, but I wanted to point it out in case you need to get it sorted.

Thanks John,

The first pick shows how obvious it is. Its is just the flash in my pics causing the fading in the middle of the wood veneer centres. There is nothing to worry about here for me. Thank you for the links, greatly appreciated.

Must go out for another drive.....................
