Guys

I'm going to be in the market for an XF in about 18 months time. I could probably get one now but it would be older and lower spec than I want.

The model I'm wanting is the 3.0 D S Portfolio but post facelift so I get the 8 speed gearbox etc.

At the moment they seem to be starting at 26k+ for decent low mileage examples.

The question is what is something like the above car going to cost in 18 months time?

Tbh, expect at least £1k/month depreciation from list price.....a recent failed shopping trip gave a residual value of £16k after 4 years on a Portfolio S RRP £49k.

Thanks for taking your time to provide a sensible answer. (not like some)

Those sort of figures should put me in an XF in 18 months time.

I don't think you can extrapolate safely from depreciation to date. It typically slows down to a lower rate per month. And if a portfolio with rrp of £49k dropped £1k a month over 48 months the residual would be £1k. And that ignores the initial discount, which would reduce the depreciation. Depreciation against list price is pretty meaningless

About 50% every 3 years would be the depreciation but add on the dealers Mark up about 20% and you won't be a million miles away.

Plus the finance, so not far off. In truth you should get about 18% discount off an S at the mo. Once the XE comes out next year and the new XF 2015, I'd want a GMFV

Your not looking hard enough. Before I bought my S Class I really felt like a change from BMW's for 4 years so I was on the hunt for an XF 3.0 Portfolio S model and I seen 3 pop up across 3 months.

1 dealer one: Fully loaded with tan leather, premium sound system few other nice options ticked and at the time was 18 months old and had 20k on the clock. it was up for 24k and haggled them down to 22,600 however by the time I got my ass into gear it was sold to someone who had just popped into the forecourt.

2 private ones: very similar in age, between 20-25k on the clock, once again nicely ticket for a few options and one was nice and one black. the white one was up at 22k and I was dying to buy it, after a bit of googling magic I checked the cached data for the advert and it showed as it was put up at 7pm and I seen it at 11 at night so it was too late to call. I called around 9 the next day thinking I hope its not too early but it was actually too fking late, a dealer had called him at 8, was coming to look at it at 10 and he said to me if it doesnt sell I will call you. He called me at 2 and told me it was sold. The other black one I liked too but it was up for 24k and I only wanted to pay 22k and he was only going to 23k so it never worked out.

Don't buy one at 26k now, even if you only keep it for a year you will have your ass ripped wide open. You will regret it.
If you seen one at a dealer, offer them 23k especially at this time of the year you should get it.

Ps in order to get these I was willing to travel across the country and also was able to be in the fortunate postion to buy outright due in part to having a large equity and a small personal loan.

Thanks for that IATM

I check to see what's around quite often and prices seem to vary a lot. Like you I'm happy to go anywhere to buy the right car and I'm hoping to buy outright as well.

It would be nice to get one now but I still have a small amount to pay off on my current car.

I think it'll be worth waiting for.
