I've had my 2000 DSV8 for a few months now and really love it! I've now tracked down the moment when the 'restricted performance' message appears c/w the amber light. I'm in the habit of using the gearbox as appropriate and if I leave it in D, then the message doesn't appear - ever. I've just done a round trip of over 600 miles from home in Orkney to Perth and some running about without a message, but deliberately only selected D when on the move. It uses all gears at appropriate loads and speeds and changes faultlessly. Now I'm safely on Island again, if I select 3 as I'm slowing for a junction/whatever, the message appears but goes away when D is selected again. There is no lumpy running, but obviously I can feel the lack of power - which is still adequate. Only when I switch off and back on again does full power resume.
Any ideas - I know it's a Daimler, but the XJR and XKR are mostly the same components. Is it likely to be in the J gate mech? - microswitches, or more seriously in the box - it's the Merc derived unit.

See if it happens with the cruise turned off. I had exactly this on my previous XJ8 frequently with the cruise turned on but never with it switched off and it turned out to be poor contact on the two micro switches inside the brake light switch. No lack of performance though.

Shot of WD 40 into the switch sorted it

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the response. I used cruise on this last trip most of the time - the A9 was very quiet both ways and I even used it in moderate traffic and used the + and - buttons when we moved between 60 and 70 National speed limits. It did not misbehave once in 600 miles. It cancelled OK with the brake or with the wheel mounted button and resumed OK too. Now, back at home I can make it do it almost anytime by using the box - D to 4, 4 to 3 and back etc. The message appears, then goes off when I move back to D, but is still actually restricted but no message until I stop, switch off and then start up again, when all is fine. Only thing I haven't tried is whether the same characteristics show up in sport mode - I used sport regularly on the old '99 308, but have not found the need yet with these 370 horses hiding in the DSV8!
I've only got a couple of weeks left before it goes into hibernation (this is Orkney!) so perhaps it might have to wait until next season. No codes showing with my simple scanner.
