Sorry Guys and Gals,
I know this has probably been done to death but I'm new on this forum ( although I have read through the past posts).
What I am really after is what the 6 is like - there is plenty of info on the 8 and I have driven one. It will be a second car and is simply a case of unjustifiable desire; but hey what's wrong with that?
Price wise it seems you can get the very best 6 for around 7 ish but an 8 will be at least 4-5 K more???
Then there is the servicing costs and the nicasil issue on the 8's.
Lastly perhaps its just the advertising effect, but I recall when the 6 came out in startling turquoise and just have a crush on it. Am I being irrational and should there be considerations of the head ruling the heart here?
Thanks for the indulgence.
Roger

Owned a 6 not an 8. However, 6 was wonderful. 1995 N low mileage. Bulletproof engine, never, I mean never had a problem. Lovely supercharger roar and, although not lunacy quick like the 8, was plenty quick enough to see off most things. Most satisfying were the various euro trips between 80-120 on French and German auto routes. Beautiful driving experience. And wifey loved it.
Thinking about buying back into these and am tempted by an 8 just because I have had a 6 before but am wary about reliability...Will watch this post for info!

In interior terms there is a fair difference, and the later car has better front suspension and brakes. However, the key difference is the way the powertrain behaves.
The 6 cylinder engine makes about 320 bhp, and either goes through a Getrag 290 manual transmission or a GM 4L80E. The manual is QUICK, although the gearchange isn't, but it is still a fast car. The 4L80E has performance, but it isn't going to beat an M5 unless the owner is half asleep.
The 8 cylinder s/c engine not only makes 370 bhp, but it goes through the world's best transmission. The ratios are excellent, and though the 0-60 time is 5.3 seconds officially, that is actually very conservative. The n/a 4.0 V8 should also be able to outperform the XJR6 automatic.
Personally I'd get an XJR8, followed by an XJ8 4.0 Sport, then an XJR6 manual, then an XJR6 auto if it was my money to spend. Test drive them and you will see what I mean.

Gavin Pearson is right, its not just the extra power of the V8, its the fantastic gearbox that transforms the 8. The XJR6 is a great modern classic though. The interior of the 8 is MUCH better designed and put together, makes the car feel as-new inside. Having said that, my XJR8 is starting to feel its age, but only in respect of ride and handling compared to new cars. Always prefered those alloys on the 6!
Thanks for all the advice gents (ladies??), I appreciate your time.
Seems its hunting time for an 8 that has had an engine change, although I will test a 6, as like many I am pretty fed up with expensive unrealiable cars. The joy of ownership and those extra ponies soon wears off when its 'in again'.
Ps: I also loved the alloys on the 6, they are somehow strongly identifiable with the car
