Looking for an S-Type
Discussion
Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie in this forum, normally residing in TVR and Photography, BUT...
...I'm considering changing my ageing BMW 730iV8 (1993, 162K) for an S-Type. Budget is up to 10K, but hopefully a bit less, and I think a 2000 3.0SE is about the aiming point. I'm happy with 100K mileage as this will keep the price down and/or get me a later car. However, I do want the SE spec of leather, air-con etc.
Some Qs:
Low running costs are good - should I get the 2.5 or is there little difference? There don't seem to be many around.
There are lots of affordable 1999 T and V cars about - but would a 'first year' be best avoided?
Were any important changes made in the early years that I should take into account? (Regrettably the interior re-design that resembles the XJ is a bit too recent to be affordable I think).
Anyway, all info much appreicated: thanks. I had a 4.0 Sovereign once and it will be good to see the logo on the steering wheel again
Edited to say: will buy privately or from nearby Mannheim auction.

This is a good place to research your purchase. Sorry I have no personal experience with the S-type.
Good luck.

Hi, First post so be gentle with me........
I've got an S type, 2000 3.0 SE and I'm extremely happy with it. In my opinion its far better than my 5 series BMW it replaced, and the roadholding and handling is particularly good.
Only bug bear is the ridiculously high servicing and spare parts costs which mean that I only take it into the Jaguar dealer for the oil change ( to get the all important stamp in the book)and any other repairs I do myself.
So far in its 40k life its only needed a new front wheelbearing ( the abs sensor at the back of the bearing lets in water, an early design problem now fixed) and the anti roll bar bushes needed changing.
The two bits of rubber that make up the bushes cost £108 in total for something that would have cost no more than a fiver to make, so I'm feeling a bit sensitive about the issue. I was assured that they are the "improved model" bushes but even the bandit behind the spares counter was embarrassed at the ridiculous cost. Also there can be a recurrent problem with wheel vibration caused excessively large tolerances at the wheel manufacturer, also cured on later year cars.
So in short I'd buy another one but I'd make sure that its as sound as you can as spares costs can mount up.
Cheers,
Tony

Hi Tony and welcome to the amazing world of PH
As my likely S-Type would be four years old with maybe 90K miles, I might use Jaguar for the regular stamp but take any interim work - like bushes! - to my local garage instead.
Are there any significant changes between 1999, 2000 and 2001 models that should alter my target? Also, were any cars issued with the U-shape centre console in veneer rather than brown plastic? I would really like the later redesigned style but that's going to be way over £10K I fear!
Plus, I see there aren't many 2.5 SEs about - seems like they weren't too popular. Are they any cheaper to run?

At the sort of miles you're talking about I wouldn't bother with main dealer servicing , with their £60 for 5 litres of bulk delivered 10/40, at all. The higher the mileage when you come to sell it on, the less value the service book becomes, as anyone looking for a full service history minter wouldn't consider a car with over 100,00 miles on the clock anyway which is what it will have when you sell it on.
If I was you I'd either find out where Ford auction their lease cars or look in Autotrader for a high mileage private sale bargain.
I bought three year old, very low mileage, 7000mls and £5 grand below book forecourt price through the Ford Pre Leased car auction route and now at 40,000mls its worth a little less than I paid for it. Thinking about it the first leasee paid almost £2 per mile in depreciation !!
I will be buying my second S type next year and I'm thinking that your high miles route may get me the Supercharged S type I'm hankering after..........
Cheers,
Tony
