Has anybody else experienced or heard of reliability problems with the 5-speed auto boxes on the V8 jags?

I ask because my car is currently in the garage having problems put right after a new one has fitted, and now the gearbox has failed on the courtesy car!

A quick response would be appreciated before I phone the garage to send them another piece of my mind!

AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I have read in a number of places that they are sealed for life, with a life expectancy of no more than 10 years. This may therefore become a problem for an increasing number of owners

Isn´t the XJR-X308 gearbox a Mercedes unit and differs from the other V8s?

Cheers Guys for your response.

A different specialist has confirmed that failed 5-speed autoboxes is a common problem on the V8s. They are Mercedes units and should be sealed for life.

I just needed the info as back-up for when I told the garage their courtesy car had let me down. Didn't want anybody accusing me of breaking it!

As it happens they were apologetic etc. and are replacing it today.

PS: Full story of this debacle will appear on these pages whenI finally get my own car back.

Only the XJR and XKR supercharged versions had the Mercedes auto box. The naturally aspirated XJ8s and XK8s have a ZF auto box.
