Hi everyone!

I've been toying with the idea of an XK8 or XKR for a while now, and went to look at a V reg XKR today.

What things should I look out for? The car has 61k on the clock, and the dealer wants 23k for it. The car has FJSH, and has just had the major 60k service done, as well as new tyres. (how much do these cats cost to service?)

He only wants to give me 9.5k for my Y reg CLK230K (has 120k on the clock). The finance company have approved me, and I'm sleeping on the decision - the dealer seems keen as he's called me a few times to see if I've made a decision.

I have seen an S-reg XKR with 30k on the clock elsewhere for the same price, but the one I saw today was absolutely pristine (you'd think it'd only done 10k).

Is there much between the 8 and R??

Any advice/help will be greatly appreciated!

V-Reg means it might be a nicasil engine version. Check the chassis number, IIRC if it ends with 6 numbers it nicasil, if it ends letter A+5 numbers then it not.

Even if it's a nicasil engine, it may not be a problem as Sulphur petrol is no longer sold, but ask for the results of a blow-by test and get a concrete guarantee from Jaguar themselves.

Other things that let go at this age are shocks. It should feel good to drive, albeit a little ponderous in corners. Any over/under damping (e.g. does it crash into holes, or does it 'bounce' over speedhumps) means they are shot, expect to pay £500 for fully fitted replacements.

Other than that check normal stuff like disks, pads, etc.

Price seems a little on the high side considering you are trading in as well. For that you should expect only 1-2 previous owners and a fantastic warranty. Especially as it appears the dealer is looking to make their money 'both ends' of this deal.

Edited to say:
IMO The 'R' is a MUCH better car than the '8'

What's a nicasil engine? And what would you say was a reasonable price?

The guy was quite frank and told me he doesn't want my car as a trade - he's just going to send it on to another trader at the same price (or so he says).

The car has 3 previous owners.

To be honest £9500 sounds like a good shout for a Y reg 230CLK with 120k up it!

I have driven the 8, and it is really a very nice car, and it has good power which will not push you in your seat, but will get you forwards.

But, then I drove the R (which I own now), this is a total transformation, besides CATS and other little extra's, the engine has much more power, and will definitely push you back in your seat if you use it. However the sound of the NA V8 is nicer, as with the R you will hear the whine of the SC when you really use the engine, which doesn’t disturb me at all.

Best is to make a test ride and you will know which car fits your needs...

PS: There is no document I know of from Jaguar stating that the new MY2000 5 digit VINS do not have Nikasil, only that they moved away from Nikasil in September 2000. My car is produced in June 2000 (VIN A099xx), and has a Nikasil engine which is confirmed by Jaguar.
