Jaguars amongst least reliable cars - BBC article
Discussion
Hi guys and girls. I can't understand this reliability thing with Jags at the moment. My XJ8, in 3 years of ownership and 350000 miles of use, has cost me nothing but service cost and a couple of sets of tyres. My old XJ6 before that had only some exhaust gaskets, plus the cost of 30000 miles of servicing, in two and a half years of ownership.I might be just lucky, but when the time comes to trade in the "super cruiser" it'll be the same again Sam.
Well, I think I must be your 'typical' Jag owner. When it runs well, there are few better cars, but I can count on one hand the times I have driven it and something hasnt got wrong. Maybe its just teething problems (only had it a few weeks), but I dare say I wont be buying a Jag again in a hurry.
Its a crying shame, really.

As far as I understood, JP Power only surveys for the problems during the fist 90 days of ownership.
So basically you only know how well it is screwed together.

If you look at their site you will find that they only survey older cars. So no X-type of new XJ.

Bear in mind the BBc survey gets its info from claims made to an independent warranty company.
Eg 1. If you have a 5 year old Fiesta worth £5000 will you pay £800 for a 3 year warranty? - probably not, so no claims recorded.
Eg 2. If you have a 5 year old XJR worth £20,000 will you pay £1000 for a 3 year warranty? - Probably, hence more claims recorded.
Remember statistics can be used to prove anything.

If they include the X-Type the rating will take an even bigger nose dive! My wife had one, there was always someting going wrong, not funtioning properly or a piece of interior trim had fallen to pieces???? I hear its getting better but they are not worthy of the Jaguar name!

I bought a new X-Type from Lancaster in Reading in September 2003. The steering failed as I left the showroom.
A catalogue of farcical events later - part didn't arrive, wrong fault diagnosed etc. - they offered me £15k for a car which 3 months previously cost me more than £20k - the only reason I was wanting to get rid of it becasue they had sold me a pup and couldn't fix it. In the end we settled on £17.5k.
MORAL OF THE STORY -
There is only one thing worse than a new Jaguar. And that is a Jaguar main dealer.
My XK8 is going into Racing Green for a service tomorrow.
