i am interested to find out if anyone can recommend the best kind of oil to use to reduce wear and tear. The car has done 80,000 miles with a full history.

Hi,

Welcome.
My Jag specialist recommends Shell Helix, which I use, my oil gets changed at about 3000/4000 miles which means annualy.

Best advice is to see your Bank Manager or financial adviser...............only kidding.

Find yourself a good Independant Jag specialist preferably by reccomendation.

Join the JEC, lots of help and can be great fun, I am with the Bucks and Herts Region, where are you located?

Jaguar World Magazine has an XJS Bulletin every month, very informative.

Usually any good brand of 15/40 is fine, if my memory serves me correctly.

Besides, at 80K a Jag V12's barely run-in!

Don't worry the Jag V12 engine had already undergone years of development and upgrading by the time they made yours. They really are great engines.

the only thing you need to worry about on Pre 1991 XJS's is th4e dreaded tin worm.

Oh . Take it out and give the loud pedal a damn good kicking

As for your rear arches, can't be any worse than this:

And my kitty survived that!

Hi Bob,
Well the "before" is above, and the "during" are below. I've not actually got a final "after" shot of the repair area!

And I did all the work myself!

Even I'm not that much of a bodger! The inside of the wheelarch was made from the right-thickness plate bent and shaped to fit. The outside of the wheelarch including the last six inch of sill was removed from a wrecked car that was due to be crushed (it had been stripped for parts, I got to cut some lumps off the bare shell). I welded the whole thing together and the car passed her MOT with the repairs deliberately left visible. The skim of filler shown in the pre-paint picture was to smooth the panel out over the welds and to sharpen the lines. Also, my car already had about 2mm of filler all along the sill. I've been lead to believe that this is fairly common on BL cars.

Phew! Had me worried there... Though I figured it wasnt due to the visible welds on the inside of the arch. It is true that the cars weight used to vary a lot from the factory dependent upon how much filler was used.

Out of interest, what spraying kit do you use? Interesting wheels btw, looks like your xjs is more than a boulevard cruiser I suppose is the phrase!

The spray kit belongs to a local college where I "study" car restoration two evenings a week (ie I pay a couple of hundred quid a year for six hours a week use of a fully equiped workshop!!).

The car is on Wolfrace alloys that were on her when I took over the right to throw money at her!!! She's pretty much a standard 3.6l car (injection and manual). I do have plans though!
