Mysterious knock continues. 300 mile round trip later got 25 mpg on way out. Now there's 'check engine' warning & FF14 showing on the trip computer. Seems to be running ok, but mpg on way back was 24, and I was driving slower. Anyone know what FF14 is please?

FF14 is a fault in the coolant temperature sensor circuit. Could be just a bad connection onto the sensor or bad sensor (quite common). Mine needs new temperature sensors for the coolant and air-intake. She's idling rough, but if I short the coolant sensor and open-cct the air sensor, she settles down (I don't have the onboard computer, so don't get the fun of FF-* or check engine!!).

Thanks a million for that reply, Sheepy - will check round the bay later - Dont fancy being fleeced by yet another 'specialist'.

If you're not sure where to look, let me know. I can point you roughly in the right direction by taking piccys of my engine (you have got the straight-six haven't you?).

Thanks Sheepy, Yes it's the facelift model 6cyl. Is the sensor one of the two connections under the heater rail, under inlet manifold?

And I am not lumping Steve Hayward (Bob France's Guru) into the so called 'specialist' bin; he is a true Specialist & a gent, but hasnt yet had the pleasure of doing paid work on her, just offered freebie consolation (see earlier posts) and I darent ring him unless it is to book her in

Hi Jim,

I've got the older 3.6 engine, but the basic location can't have changed much (I hope). Here's mine:

It's the brown plug mounted on the thermostat housing.

Hope this helps,

Yep - that's it. 'Check engine' shows only when ignition on usually, and goes off when engine running. It stays lit with engine running when brown plug disconnected, goes off when connected. Next step to replace plug I guess and see what happens. Thanks again.

From what little I know of the later engine, isn't there a procedure to clear fault-codes (ie reset the computer)? I'll have a dig on Jag-Lovers and see what I can find.

Chap I bought car from used to remove battery terminal when the FF23 showed. Can do this but wont it keep returning if fault not resolved?

by the way, have resumed my former monicker - Jim

Jim, nice try to confuse me

I know where you are coming from, but how do you know if cleaning the plug connectors made any difference unless you clear the fault code? Try the reset, and if ff14 still comes back, then the fault is something other than the connector.

Jim,

Just been speaking with a real expert (actually trying to solve my issues), you should check the white plug (in my photo) as well. One is the sensor for the cold-start, the other is the sensor for the ECU in normal operation.

Resetting worked. Had cleaned connector but no debris evident. My better half used car yesterday and reports new prob anyway - revving to 4000rpm on startup, when you turn off and restart, it'sfine. Did it twice. TVR used to do the same. Maybe engine sensor.

Thanks Sheepy
