If done before, Sorry:

Just finished looking at some pics and links to some Jag sites, and I realised that the new(er) Jags did not have a Leaping Cat on the hood (sorry, bonnet).

What is up with that? Is there some styling change the factory is going through so that the US cars are going to be cat-less soon? I mean, I can still tell a Jag from most other cars, but I would think that there should be a Jag for a Jag.

Hi Dave, A victim of road safety laws I'm afraid. Although I do believe they CAN still be fitted if fastend with Nylon nuts which will shear off in an accident with a pedestrian. Don't have one myself but a nice leaping cat side badge would be great, (in the style of the old Mustang badge).

Maybe in the US you will be OK, Different laws (I presume).

Seems a shame for the factory to not mount the emblem for you with nylon nuts.

Besides, how are you supposed to move the peasants out of the way?

The world is getting far too PC.

Best,
Dave

Yep! I think if a two ton car were to hit you, the last thing to worry you would be the bonnet {sorry hood) emblem. I think I have seen reference to a side "leaping cat" badge, in the US I think. Have you seen one Dave? Do they have them in the US?

Oh! Mine is a Yr 2000 4 litre XJ8 by the way! GLIDES when drivin' slow! but is GREAT in sports mode at speed on winding British roads, still can't believe that such a big car can be so agile.

The leaper disappearing isn't new. When jaguar launched the xj6 in 1968 the leaper didn't appear on the bonnet(hood) but on the front wings behind the wheelarch. Unfortunately European law states that if a car emblem has not appeared continuously for the last 30 years on the car range, the manufacturer can no longer allow vehicles to leave the factory with the emblem present (hence MERCEDES and ROLLS ROYCE can continue to this day to mount their respective emblems). Retrofitting the leaper is also illegal in europe, the jaguar enthusiasts club strongly recommend you do not do this.Any accident where the police get involved and a leaper is present on a post 68 car expect the worst.
It's ironic that because of the car safety lobby in the US in the late 60's jag launched the xj6 without the leaper, but it's only now that the US may be joining europe in leaperless jags.

Sorry, I have looked at the Jaguar US site and do not see any side badging. But the logo at the top of the page sure looks like it could be adapted. Wink,wink...nudge,nudge...

Thanks Dave, remember where I saw that now! It was on EBAY, a chrome (side view type) leaper badge, only "1 of" though.

Pity it hadn't been "2 of" left and right. for the front "fender as you would call it. Had wondered where and from what it had come from, not aware of any such badge in UK at any time.

Ah! Edited to say that I've just noticed that DominicF has just answered my question for me, 1968 Eh! pity they couldn't re-introduce that, DominicF. Don't suppose many are still available anywhere?
