Well I've finally gone and done it. I've put a deposit own on a '98 XJR-8 , picking it up a week on Monday.

British Racing Green with Oatmeal leather and freshly refurbed 18 inch Penta's... always wanted a fast BRG car!

It has one of the Jaguar phones installed but without a handset. Does anyone know if some sort of adapter is available to connect a mobile phone in it's place?

As always, any help appreciated!

It's definitely a StarTAC - Jaguar salesman and I were talking about it over the weekend, don't know which model though. eBay?

I like the idea of making a call from the steering wheel a lot, but dislike (lots) the idea of having to have a StarCrap - last one I had I got so fed up with I ended up playing football with it.

If you get a Nokia/Ericsson fitted, can you use the microphone(s) which must already exist for the intergrated kit or do you have to get new ones wired in?

Found a few Startacs on Ebay so will get one of those, then see how I get on with it. There are some very cheap sim only deals available at the moment on Vodafone network, so I'll get a seperate one for the car and just divert my mobile to it every time I drive.

Will see how I get on.

Only seven days to go....

Good idea Groomi, though there might be another option...

Get the StarTac and keep it in the XJR, and get a secondary SIM card on your number from your provider. I think when you turn your phone on you can type something like ##12# or something equally unmemorable, and then that SIM becomes your active one. Do the reverse when you get out again and you're sorted.

Therefore you can make and receive calls in the car and on your regular phone and only have one bill.

Am interested to hear how you get on with the XJR, good choice!

Cheekychap, I didn't know that phone companies would issue a second sim card. Have you done this or know of someone who has?

Sounds like the purrfect option (Sorry, couldn't resist)

A colleague did it with the StarTac fitted to his new (ex demo) M3 and a Nokia 6310 he used the rest of the time. Bit of a fiddle but its technically possible.

Mind you we had a corporate phone contract provider who were considerably more open to providing solutions than the mobile companies themselves.

So, should be possible, but you may have to work the charm on whoever your provider is!

Best of luck Groomi!

Have to ask though, shouldn't you be listening to the V8 rather than your missus asking why you've gone the long way home?

Ahh, she understands. It was the missus who insisted I got the V8 not the straight 6. A little bit of training goes a long way

my nokia kit is integrated,it allows me to answer a call from the steering wheel, i use the mic provided with the kit fitted by the sun visor, the call is heard through the stereo speakers,u can vary the sound level of the call via the sterring wheel controls, the kit also shows up a call as that on the head unit and switches your radio / cd off. one thing my kit does not allow is to actually make a call from the steering wheel but from what i rememeber this is not too easy with the jag kit either

Good Luck with the car Iain, I've had a 2000 4ltr XJ8 for 2 and a half years now, at low speeds it doesn't drive, it GLIDES!
At higher speeds, on bends, it defies logic that a Big car like that can be so nimble and stable.

Depress the "sports" button on mine ...and... WOW!! What yours will be like with another 100 hp doesn't bear thinking about.......Enjoy!!!

P.S. I've NO experience of the new "ALI" 2004 model but, the X300 series >2004 for my money is the best jag yet. The word is slowly spreading!
