Hi guys,
I have been reading with interest the auto to manual conversion for the V8 engined cars, but I was wondering if anyone has done something similar with the x300 series bearing in mind some came with manual boxes?
Were the boxes in the lesser 4.0 and 3.2 manuals the same spec as the XJR?

The 3.2 and 4.0 manual XJ6s both had Getrag gearboxes but with different identifying numbers - 265 and 290. Whether this was simply down to different ratios or one was stronger that the other I don't know. chrisdurham said:

It might be better to buy a manual supercharged XJR6, than convert an automatic one. There was a poster on www.xj40.com (xj12-rob) who has a large collection of Jaguars and is selling his manual XJR6, due to the arrival of the last one made - with an incredible 9,000 miles.
The one he is selling is a black one with an Oatmeal interior. I haven't seen it, but it looks to be a very nice one on the photos. I don't know whether he still has it, but he only put it up for sale a week or so ago IIRC.
am pretty sure the 290 is stronger. the 290 was also fitted to the 4.0 n/a engine. it wont be easy to find. i recently have pieced together a manual conv kit for one of my xj40's.
bear in mind, that to do a proper conversion you will need, the 290 Getrag, Manual pedal box, manual prop shaft, manual gearbox mount, gear knob and gator. ideally also a manual ski slope, as they are different to the auto version, but an auto ski slope can be adapted.
and now here is the big one! try finding a manual s/c ECU! in theory its possible to modify the auto xjr ecu, but its an expert job. there is a chap called andy stoddard who can do it apparently. he was involved in the original ecu mapping for jag, so knows his stuff.
having said all that, i know of a breaking manual 300R. was on ebay a while back.

While on this subject, a bit of research made it seem that the 265 being for 3.2s and the 4.0 getting the 290 was only for xj40s, plus other few sources I came across suggested that the 265 was dropped at the xj40 suggesting that all x300s have the 290. Can anyone confirm on way or the other?
Furthermore, is anyone aware of someone going about the conversion the reverse way and sticking a xjr6 engine into a manual xj6? From the sounds of things the biggest hassle would be the Ecu, but you could factor in a tidy xj6 manual, donor car and stand alone engine management and still have considerable change over a factory manual xj6.
And How long is a 265 likely to survive behind a xjr6 engine?

as far as i know, 3.2 & 2.9 XJ40's used the Getrag 255 box. the 265 was fitted to 3.6 XJ40 and XJS. 290 Getrag for all 4.0 XJS/XJ40/X300 & supercharged x300.

not sure about a 265 with s/c 4.0, but i know quite a few V12 XJS's have been converted to manuals using donor kits from 3.6 manual XJS (265 getrag). though you will hear varying opinions on how well those conversions work? some say the ratios are all wrong? but then again its probably the most straight forward to do in terms of sourcing a donor car/ conversion kit

i have ready many discussion on people thinking about transplanting s/c AJ16 into other jags.
there is a SII XJ6 on retro rides, which was part way converted last time i saw it. many people talk about sticking one in an XJ40, but i have not seen it yet done yet.
there is someone putting one into a facelift XJS, with a manual box, but again not completed. been going a few years already.
there was one guy trying to get it into a vauxhall Victor of all things, but the project was old on ebay, uncompleted.
even seen one in a BMW 3 series though! cant remember if it was running/ completed or not though.
so as you can see, its not as easy as you might hope. many have tried- dont think anyones succeeded yet? please prove me wrong though, if anyone has seen it done yet?

Its a S1 on Retro Rides and its mine. I have had it running; just not completed the old beast yet. I've just ordered a new ECU for it. Gearbox is the Getrag 265.there is a SII XJ6 on retro rides, which was part way converted last time i saw it. there is someone putting one into a facelift XJS, with a manual box, but again not completed. been going a few years already.
The XJS facelift is completed and running, using a hybrid XJR6/XJS ECU. Can't remember if the gearbox was a 265 or a 290; I think it was the 265 but I will ask.

Mechanically its simple. Getting the electrics right is the hard part. Off the top of my head of completed projects there is also:- S2 XJC with a Broadspeed kit, featured in Practical Performace Car a few months ago.
- XJS facelift in the USA, I believe its on XJSdata somewhere with pictures.
- XJS Coupe. There's a couple of video's on youtube showing it at the Woodbridge speed trials a few years ago.
- S3 E type. looked to use the Getrag 290.
- Unknown type dragster; still going strong at Stratford last month. Auto
- Morris 14. Done in a 'rat rod' kind of style. Auto
ah interesting. hows the conversion going. it was ages when i last looked at it, hence i forgot it was S1 jag
also, thanks for confirming the other s/c aj16 conversion that you have seen. clearly you have been looking more than me!
any chance you can post some links to them, as i would love to see them? am glad that some conversions have gone to completion. as you say its the electrics that are the challenge.

Mine has not moved on much beyond getting the engine and box in and getting it running, more due to lack of time than anything else. I've been concentrating on my S3 lately, but will be back on the S1 soon.

Mine has not moved on much beyond getting the engine and box in and getting it running, more due to lack of time than anything else. I've been concentrating on my S3 lately, but will be back on the S1 soon.

I'm just in the process to convert an Series1 XJ to S/C XJR Engine
I still have an XJR6 Engine (auto version) with full harness and ECU (to be reprogrammed by Andy Stoddard)
Getrag 290 gearbox
Flywheel and 240mm clutch from a XJS
Spline of the clutch disk fits to the gearbox inlet shaft - perfect
Gear of the Flywheel fits to the starter circle - perfect
Bolt pattern fits to the crank flange - perfect
this afternoon I will bring the assy to a clutch specialist for a) 280mm conversion, or b) sport clutch in 240mm conversion to handle the torque - we will see
BUT I'm now wondering if I need an adaptor plate at the crankshaft flange, because the bolt circle to mout the flywheel is correct but the stub on which the flywheel sits is much to long for this solid flywheel (XJR manual normally uses a thicker dual mass - but they are to rare).
The X300 workshop manuals shows such an adaptor but only for the Auto version...not for the manual gearbox
(due to the thicker dual mass flywheel I think)
my Auto enginge doesn't have it. The adaptor plate luckily is still available

is your gearbox and clutch assembly succesfully finished?
I own a XJ40 4.0 with the Getrag 290 gearbox. My dual mass flywheel is completely worn out and i can't find any replacement.
Things that shouldn't happen with 62 000 miles..
The local Jaguar dealer coulnd't help me find the EBC3114 either.
Now I'm wondering if it is possible to fit the clutch and flywheel package of the 3.6 with the 240mm clutch to my 4.0.
Has anyone done this before? Will the ring gear of the 3.6 flywheel fit if I put the adapter EBC1908 in between engine and flywheel?
Or does anyone know a better alternative? Help will be highly appreciated..
