I am not sure what would be a normal/acceptable consumption, but compared to mine it sounds a bit high. In the 10Kmiles my '00 XKR would consume about 1/2 litre give or take 1/4.

Havn't owned an XK for long enough - mine is only an 8! not an 'R' but one thing is certain. They are big engines that stay warm for a long time. Make sure it is cold when you check it.

I just changed my oil, so that I know whats in it, and only put 6 litres in it to start with/let it settle/etc.

When I checked it was nearly on max The book says 7.3 litres becuse it has an oil cooler so its a good job I underfilled to start. As you should do, I know, but thought I would be well safe with that amount!

Any 'grease monkeys' out there know if it retains a fair bit when you drain it because of the oil cooler?

You're quite right, the AJV8 uses a patented system called "precision cooling"- which allows a rapid warm up and that is why it retains heat so well.

The oil capacity on the early AJ26s was 6.8 litres but this was increased to 7.3 litres on AJ27s (1999 Model year I think). I don't THINK the oil cooler retains much (in terms of dilution of old oil) when you drain for an oil change.
