I had to have a new gearbox fitted to my S type in February 2003.

The car was on 58,000 miles and was covered by the manufacturers warranty.

Then 14 months later a seal went on the gearbox and the labour was covered by Jaguar.

Now 4 months on and 18 months since the new gearbox was fitted it has gone again. The car has done 42,000 on the "2nd" gearbox. In total just over 100,000 miles.

Now i have to have a third gearbox fitted. The car was newly registered in November 2000. It's less than 4 years old and about to go onto it's 3rd gearbox.

This time Jaguar will not cover the cost. they say legally they are under no obligation becuase all waranties have expired. They will though as a matter of goodwill pay for half the parts and labour. I'm still left with a bill of around £1600.00 inc VAT.

My question is. Is this fair? Are Jaguar being fair or should they be responsible for the 3rd gearbox. It's not a good advert for a car that less than 4 years old having done 100,000 miles to be starting it's 3rd gearbox.

Should I be grateful that they are at least paying for half of the cost?

I'm a first time poster on here so I'd appreciate your thoughts and advice.

With a continuing problem that in your case has a long history, then not taking no for an answer is surely the way to go.

I don't know, but I would agree that the car warantee has expired, BUT they should honour a new warantee with each NEW gear box they put in?!! That would be the stance I would take.

I have come to the point, that I will not tolerate the poor level of customer service in the UK. I fight all my battles now.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Anyone else any thoughts?

I know the 5R55N transmission inside out.

The dealer may have diagnosed the problem incorrectly.

Most important thing on a 5R55N is to set the oil level correctly, which must be done at no more than 100 Farenheit / 40 C. The car must be COLD to do this, and the dealer must do all the preparation work before even considering getting the car in on the ramp.

Once they have set the oil level check the J gate function. Basically the lights should light where the gearlever is placed. If you do not get the lights to work, then the cable needs adjusting, as the lights are governed by a TRS signal on the transmission and not by anything in the J gate.

With that set clear the P codes from the transmission and then drive the vehicle.

Let me know exactly what the problem is (P Codes et cetera) and I can figure it out.

Let me know the exact symptoms too, precisely what happens when you put it into gear, a delayed engagement, loss of a particular gear.

I am sure that it is possible to repair the unit you have for a fraction of the cost they are quoting you.
