It's fast approaching that time of year again and I'm considering trying this stuff

http://maplesigns.co.uk/partslist/index.php?main_p...

Any opinions or experiences with this? Or any other suggestions/advice?

From what I can tell the options are Acoustafil, Basalt or E-Glass.

My exhaust is the allen screw assembled type so think this should be easy enough to do, I've already opened up my exhaust and there was no packing left in it!

Thanks,

Dunc.

At this price Acoustafil has got to be worth a try! Interested to know how it performs. Keep posting.

I found a post from 2009 saying someone was trying it, if we're lucky they may post up. If not I will if I give it a try.

The strokes those crafty racers pull ........... most leave a teeny bit in in case the scrut gets clever with his torch.

From memory, it was Dario trying out Acousti-fil back in 09, but I doubt he used the car enough subsequent to really know how successful it is/was?

Merits aside (the big one being that it can't be as nasty to handle as E Glass), as that 300mm seems a bit mean on width/depth, might be worth having a look here (especially as they also have a calculator)? >

We changed all our cars to Acoustafil a couple of years ago and haven't looked back.
Even got the F3s thru' at Combe where others failed.....Phew

As Static Noise Levels are the single biggest issue with stuff like Rads & F3s nowadays, great to hear Graham, especially so given the shenanigans the Rad Boys had at CC this year just gone, albeit on a trackday.

What packing were you using before and about what sort of reduction do you think the Acousti-fil achieves? Did you use it straight on to the perforated pipe or separated via stainless steel?

Agreed that does sound promising, I'd be keen to know the answers to those questions also. And cheers for the link Splitpin smile

Hi Trev et al,
This noise issue is as you say becoming increasingly important. What I cannot understand is the lack of technical information available to us. Are there such animals as Acoustic Engineers who can explain what is required to produce certain noise levels or is it all rocket science? To be thrown out of a meeting on noise grounds is irritating beyond measure. It seems crazy to me that such an important aspect of our sport is subjected to seemingly random solutions.

The first back to back we did was with our Pilbeam CN car 2.0 Honda 16 valve vvt
Originally using wire wool wrapped around the perf tube and then packed with Basalt.
Acousta-fil only was used and was packed to the density recommended by the supplier Saveguard, after giving them the dimensions of the silencer.
We dropped about 3db.
Don't know how much difference you would enjoy with a bike engine, but certainly wouldn't go back to Basalt myself.

not so much rocket science (which is easy and repeatable) more like smoke and mirrors and an art form.

Two apparently identical cars with the same silencer have been known to be measured as different as 30dB, on the same meter at the same revs!
