I've decided to keep my SR3 and spend some money on it over the winter.
My Avo shocks are looking a bit sad, (they;re the originals). Can anyone recommend an upgrade that isn't going to cost be £600 per shock (if you know what I mean!!) ?
Also, I want to get the car stripped and re-painted, can anyone recommend someone they've used to do this in the past ?

This is great news Ali! thumbup

I know a lot of the right on the limit racers don't seem to rate them highly, but if it's going to be trackdays, you could stick with the AVOs, either having them rebuilt by them or replacing 'like for like'? More highly rated, a lot seem to go for single monotube Intraxs which seem to show at about £400 each plus VAT including springs; have a word with Radical; they may cut you a deal for a full set of four?

Ain't no harm trying/asking!

Thanks guys, interested in hearing aboiut the Koni's. I would rather keep the price of a new set in 3 figures if possible so want to know all my options. I don't race so I'm not paying 1500-2500 for a set, I hope there are some cheaper options that are better than the Avo's ?

Hi

You may want to consider protech

I ended up with avo's on the front and protech on the rear of my SR4!

That car would lap Combe in the mid 6's

I think that would be a option

Have you considered giving Guy @ Nitron a call? They can build a single adjustable damper with whatever hysteresis curve you specify with bump:rebound ratio built to your spec as well. They'll be around £1000-£1300/set (4).

I just called Protech and single adjustable's are £387 for a set of 4 and double adjustable's are £689 - seems very cheap !!? Has anyone got experience of using Protech's - are they any good (bearing in mkind track day use only) ??
Cheers

I fitted Protech double adjustables to SportLibre's Clubsport.
He does hillclimbs and sprints with his.
The Protech units are very nice.
We had a slight problem fitting the front units as the shocks would not fit into the recess in the bottom arms.
(Don't know if the SR3 would have this problem)
We got round this by making special top collars and inverting the units.
I'm sure we could have got Protech to make special bodies but it was quicker for me to turn up the special collars

Hi

They were factory fitted to my Radical when I bought it new in 2004

Protech will be comparable to AVO's - some will say better, some will say worse.. but in reality, and particularly for track day use - either will do absolutely fine..

I've ran single adjustable Pro Techs this year in a bike engined seven, and the performance/times have been extremely competitive all year for me..

The Koni 2812's i had on the prosport were definately much better in terms of quality and no doubt outright performance/consistency..

But for track days and even racing (unless a few tenths off absolute pace) i doubt you'd notice...

Hi, if you're asking me how long my shocks are, I don't know tbh - they are the standard factory Avo shocks.
Sounds like the Protech jobbies for 400 quid a set are a reasonable buy.

Ditto our previous, SR4, 2004.

Radical don't seem to rate them at all now, but that's not to say they wouldn't do the job perfectly adequately for a trackday car.

Chees guys, I will give the Protech's a go then. Your experience of bodging them to fit an SR4 sounds a little worrying but I think I will send one of my Avo's to Protech so that they ensure they give me the right size. Thanks for everyone's help.

I know it's a bit late in the day, but if protech's function the same as Avo's, then why not just get your Avos reconditioned by Avo? Much cheaper and more environmentally friendly! That's what I did on my clubbie and that worked fine.

Thanks for the advice Bert. Are they literally as good as new when they are reconditioned ?? Mine have been on there for 5 years now and look pretty terrible.......
