Hi. Apologies for posting in this section as I don't own a Radical, ( one day maybe ), and I appreciate most of you guys are likely running bussa's etc but I thought you might be able to help?
I own a Jedi hillclimber with an oil cooled big bore 1370cc GSXR engine in it, ( Powertech ). Problem is it leaks oil and I cannot find the source? I've tried new seals on starter/alternator/sprocket + have had engine out and sent away to Powertech to have cover faces machined + new gaskets. I did this because a recent rolling road session showed no leaks even when under load, however a smoke test showed a leak from hole where starter wires come up through ignition/rotor pick up cover.
The leak only appears after a twisty run which suggests to me that surge around corners plays a part + results in oil collecting on top of crank case between starter/alternator + on chassis tubes near sprocket side of engine. There's no sign of leaks from barrel gaskets or aeroquip etc?

Anyone experienced similar? The car goes fantastically and I've yet to try a run since getting engine back from builder but just thought I'd ask in case leak is still there and it's back to the drawing board?
Thanks, Ed.

Hi Ed

No need to apologise, all of us on here (well most of us!) are like minded people!

I'll bet that car is huge fun!

I'll drop a 'can you have a look at this post?' email to DSL and LCM; apologies if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but former ran a tuned GSXR in a Force and latter has done some amazing things in his Uphill Prosport (albeit 'Busa empowered) and one or both may have some useful input to make.

All that occurs to me is to ask whether you're dry-sumped? I know you guys are totally anti carrying any sort of avoidable weight, but with the serious amount of folding tied-up in a 1370 GSXR, I'd want to be given the phenomenal G Forces you must be generating in a Jedi (which I adore!) with that much go. Sunny-side of 200 RWHP?

Presumably you told Powertec what you were using the engine in and for and what the issue was? I'm thinking they should know whether additional drains were therefore warranted/recommended?

Hi,

Trev has linked me in to this one to see if I can shed any light on it for you. Now I ran a GSXR1000 K7 in my Force, so not directly comparable as your engine is of a much early vintage, being oil cooled it must give more opportunities for oil to present in many more places I guess!

Really all I can suggest is to take several tins of brake cleaner, make sure its as clean as a whistle then run it on the hills for one run, surely after such a short period with the aid of a couple of jacks & decent torch unless its absolutely streaming out of it you will be able to trace it back to its source?

Thanks guys. No it's not dry sumped so I guess there is more opportunity for oil to find a way out. We've tried tracing after a run but it doesn't continue to leak, we're just left looking at oil on engine top + chassis tubes making it very hard to trace. We'll see what the next run brings!

Thanks again,

Ed.

PS. Have purchased some Dowty Washers to see if they help on any bolts passing through covers/webbing etc?

positioning a couple of those cheapo camera's may show what you want to see - dependsing on light and the various chassis tubes/pipes and bodywork etc..

Crank case breather pipe? I'm assuming it no longer runs into the airbox?

Hi. Thanks - this was our next plan if no nearer. I don't know whether we'll be able to see much but I was suprised to see how cheap the cameras are so can use to film future runs even if doesn't show leak. Any idea which camera might be best without spending loads?
Cheers, Ed.

I'll need to check as can't remember from memory. We've checked all breathers so I guess it begs the question of whether the breathing is designed sufficiently well or whether any blockages internally although engine runs fine, levels ok, temp ok, etc..?

Cheapo (like a tenner plus a Micro SD card) video cameras (and you'll be amazed at the quality) on:

But don't tell Splitpin 'cos he'll tell you off. smile

Might be of some use, a short disscussion from quarter milers discussing crankcase ventilation on big bore oil cooled motors.

No leak !! Thanks for all the replies but it seems that we diagnosed right and that the engine out/ trip to Powertech was worth it. Cheers, Ed.
