to buy or not to buy
Discussion
Hi Everyone,
Thinking of changing my car and buying a more track focused car, quite like the look of the radicals but before I take the plunge what are they like on the reliability front and running costs. I am looking at the sr3 only for trackdays so not racing it and would also like it to be road legal.
Had a Megablade which was mega reliable (forgive the pun) and very cheap to run, but sold it , now I am regretting it as my current car is very expensive to run and not suited to trackdays. Would be great to get some feedback.
Thanks

Well I went for a clubby for track work. Not going to be road legal though. Although as most seem to feel, the rad is not wonderful on the road and will compromise it on track.
It's hard to say about reliability. My experience is that my clubby needed quite a lot doing to it to bring it up to scratch. It was quite well worn after its racing life. You may find more modern Rads (albeit at higher prices) that have not had such a hard life.
They are in essence reliable cars, but they do have an element of fragility and they are race cars. So the engine is lifed (30 track hours for a clubsport). My rebuild (with an engine and box that was way past its best) was 4k from Radical/Powertec. That's extreme as you can get other specialists to rebuild at lower prices.
Not many other components are super pricey (except maybe the diff), but you seem to need to put quite a lot of tlc in to keep them up to spec.
I'm not advertising as it's not mine, but I do know of an SR3 for sale though if it's of interest.

Hi,
I have just listed my SR3 in classifieds. Its a 2007 and though its not road legal I doubt it would be too difficult to make it so.
I have just had a new engine fitted from powertech too, so its a great option for trouble free Radical. All receipts and gaurantees supplied.
Please let me know if you need any more information,
Regards
Gary

Thanks for the feedback,
I need to to try one to see if I like it, I have been in touch with radical,
by phone and email and no one seems interested in getting back to me, not impressed with their customers service so far!
4k to refresh a busa engine, sounds a bit steep, but if you have to have it done by powertech to keep within the racing regs then you have no choice, otherwise you can buy an entire engine for about 2k from Yorkshire engines.
I think generally the busa is a good engine in stock form, any blow ups because of oil surge.
Also I need to see if it will fit in my garage, I think it will, but then there will be no space for a trailer, so I will need to locate it somewhere else.
SOUNDS LIKE I NEED A LOW MILEAGE ROAD LEGAL VERSION THAT HAS NOT BEEN RACED TOO MUCH, CANNOT AFFORD A BRAND NEW ONE.
WHATS THE HISTORY ON YOUR SR3 2007 MODEL GARY?

Hi,
I think its always been a race car, though its not done a lot of miles as far as I am aware.
I only purchased it last month to race this season and it was fully prepared with new engine and full season check/prep, so its all good to go having only done 1 event (Rockingham).
I need to sell as my sponsors want me to do saloon car (Sport Maxx Prod. Cup) so change of plans.
Your welcome to come see the car, measure etc even if you dont want to buy mine, happy to help.
Radical are normally very helpful so I am surprised they are not returning your calls, but as I said, your welcome ot come and see mine and bounce questions at me. it is not road legal though so you would need to factor the lights/horn etc costs in to the price if you were interested.
All I can say is that it is awesome! - I have raced in the Porsche Club in 968's and 993's for the past few years and they are like racing a canal barge in comparison to the SR3! - especially with paddleshift - proper playstation for real!!!
Regards,
Gary

That's a real shame Gary: couldn't make it to Snett, but saw your first time out @ Rock and I thought at the time what a great debut you made with hardly any seat time prior.Hope to see you back sometime soon!
Thanks for the comment!
I loved the races at Rockingham and started to make good progress once I had adjusted to the differences from my Porsche days!
I will still race it until it sells though, so I will be at Oulton Park in 2 weeks unless I get a deposit from somebody before then. Its a race car, cant let it sit around gathering dust!!!

Good to hear, see you there ......... unless ..........Actually, I'm glad you mentioned 2 weeks. For some daft reason, I'd got in my head that it was the weekend coming ......... thanks for saving me a wasted trip!
