Hi all

With the race season just around the corner i have yet to do a standing start in my SR3, what the technique ? what revs do need to get it off the line ?

I'm glad you posted this...Having just finished my first weekend racing, my standing starts where abysmal.

Either seemed to be to be too heavy on on the gas or it bogged down.
Just not something you get to practice on a track day!

Hi Paul,

When doing standing starts in the SR4 at a sprint I found that about half revs did the job although I've watched some of the racers use more like 3/4 revs. It all depends on how quickly you let out the clutch really. Obviously an optimum getaway has a certain amount of wheelspin, I found approx 1.5 seconds before you regain traction for a split second before snatching second.

There are so many variables that it is unlikely anyone can give the right answer. For my clubsport, on a dry track with hillclimb rubber, I found that three green lights and a progressive clutch worked best at Gurston Down which has great tarmac and a downhill start. Whereas a completely different approach was required at Curborough which has a level start and much rougher tarmac.

As suggested a bit of wheelspin is optimal. Have a look on the right of this link for some of the hillclimb chaps approaches to the problem.

I wish I had read this post yesterday!

Have just returned from my first Sprint outing in a Radical Prosport at Goodwood (got the car in December and have been really looking forwards to it). First practice run was fine, but think I over-baked it on the first timed run and ended up breaking the chain on the start-line (I'm relieved, it could have been worse apparently!!).

With hindsight I think I may have been given some advice on how to do a flying start by the car's previous owner which wasn't ideal. He suggested about 6000 RPM and then dump the clutch. This I duly did but ended up going nowhere fast!!

The track was dry and I was on Dunlop slicks (cold but well scrubbed).

What would others recommend?

Many thanks

I used my work industrial estate as a practice, and kept going til I got better, saying that starts in the PR06 last year were generally poor, I'd ask DL, I think he must of had launch control last year!

When I was doing the national hillclimb championship I used to be pretty darn good off the line, then I started racing a PR6 & had a bit of a sharp learning curve knacking chains or bending the diff mounts due to my brutal side stepping of the clutch with 9000rpm on the clock!

Change of technique to similar revs, & a rapid(ish) rise of the clutch from closer to the bite point did the trick & more often than not resulted in a pretty mint start (short lived, until the 1600's had stopped wheel spinning!) I still manage to balls it up occasionally though!
