Testing set-up tips
Discussion
Can anyone give me a few pointers on test day set up objectives.
Apart from the feel of the car - I guess that the tyres are a good indication of the set up?
I assume that the tyres (Dunlops) need to get up to temperature to work properly.
Is there an optimum temperature they should run at?
Also - should we be aiming for equal temperatures across the width of the tyre?
Thanks Tim

Perhaps this extract from the new SR3 RS OM will help? >
Try to check the tyre temperatures for balance across the contact patch within one minute of a fast lap. The inside edge can be 10° – 15°C higher than the outer edge on Radical-approved Dunlop tyres, on the front and 5° – 10°C higher on the rear. Temperature should be close to 100°C, while temperatures over 110°C will cause damage.

Absolutely great to see you putting in an appearance here Nigel; a true (but still so modest) Radical Giant
Tim; advice on getting the best out of a Rad definitely doesn't come any better than this, so make sure you grasp the opportunity.
All being well, Nigel will be putting in some appearances at forthcoming ROC Events, tuition / teach-in opportunities etc

Tim,
As long as the car is not understeering or oversteering badly and you have had the car set-up then you should just keep driving it until you can lap every lap within 2-3 tens of the last, only then IMHO should you consider trying to make changes, because until then U won't know if the car is quicker or if you have got quicker. In the early stages seat time is what counts.
Of course I never took this good advice so feel free to ignore it..
WRT tyres I spoke to Avon with your exact same thoughts and was told that tyre temp is hard to measure properly as you need to take it below the surface and they said that the best thing to check is just pressure, this did prove useful and also helped with lap time's.
You will need some help but after you have done 6-8 laps come quickly into the pits and get your helper to measure the tyre pressures, if they are not at the target pressure (check this with Dunlop) then adjust your starting pressures before your next test/race etc. not all corners will be the same and you may need to start with uneven pressures to achieve your correct target.
