At Brands yesterday we were chasing an intermittant engine fault (ZZR1100). Symptoms were poor running, no power (not enough to get to the top of th erev range in 3rd) and the shift lights not working. We think it's electrical, maybe ecu or loom/plug related.

We'll be going through the electrical bits systematically, but has anyone had any experience of this type of symptom or can suggest any diagnostic steps?

Thanks Bert

(it happened when the car was nice and dry so probably not damp-related)

I had this and it was solved by replacing the dash white multiplug and the ingnition white multiplug. These plugs seem to give poor connections once older so I replaced them both with a different type. Dash has been spot on and runs well + starts first click ever since.

Might be worth starting with this to rule it out? Before I replaced them it sometimes wouldn't start, the red light on the dyna ignition module would not come on.

Hope this helps,

Dunc.

Graham

Check your coils and also the crank sensor? Both are easy to swap out with known good items. Does the car rev up when not under load? Good luck.

Best way to find the problem is to get the car to powertec and put it on the rollers they have all the bits to put on the car until they find the problem..

Hi Graham

I watched you going into Surtees/McClaren from Cooper for several laps latter part of the day (can't remember whether it was the last full hour or the final half hour) and I thought to myself at the time, BertBert's car doesn't sound especially healthy; kind of 'flat & clattery', not sweet high frequency revving like they usually sound/the others were.

All that said, it was darn good to see you back in the car and getting a good amount of seat time compared to the short burst @ Snett.

Good on you chap, 10/10 for sheer determination in the face of a nasty injury and still having the balls to mix it with some reet hooligans in way more powerful machinery. clap

Was the alternator charging? It is easy to blow the fuse if you have accidentally touched across whilst fitting/removing battery charger clamps. The fuse only effects the charging circuit but if the volts drop that would effect the ignition.

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions (well maybe not Gary biggrin ).

We'll see where we get.

I thought it was a given that that's what they would be doing!

I had exactly the same problem on a track day at Castle Combe last Friday, although the engine ran so badly that I had to give up.
The battery was near enough dead showing 10.7v but I thought it would charge once started with the auxiliary battery, but no luck. The dash display went out whilst queueing so I disconnected then reconnected the white dash multiplug, and it came back, but pulsing.
Martin B, where is the ignition fuse? and Dunc, where will I find the other multiplug?
The engine revved OKish in neutral, but just would not rev under load.

The fuse is right near the battery master switch in the engine bay area, it is a flying lead type, 30 amp blade fuse. If this blows, the engine will run until the battery goes flat. Another problem if the fuse is ok is the relay which controls the alternator, same general area as the fuse. Same symptoms as blown fuse.

Relay is normally here:

Fuse holder normally here:

we checked the volts and they were fine, so no problem there. It must be an ignition fault I reckon.

David, the other multi plug on my clubsport was in the same area as Martin's first photo there but further down if I recall correctly. Try to follow the cables from the DYNA ignition box in the cabin on the left (can be seen on Martin's fisrt photo also) assuming you have this.

The cables feed into the LH side pod and should come back in at the front left of the engine bay.

Hope this helps,

Dunc.

Dunc, that's not a Dyna ignition box in the cockpit, that is my ECU (running fuel injection now). Mine had the Dyna ignition box on the bulkhead behind the driver's seat.

I just drove past you in Bermondsey Ian. You looked as though you were enjoying the 5mph crawl nearly as much as I was.
