I will hopefully be firing up my new engine (ZZR1200) this week following a full rebuild and wondered what oil everyone uses for running in fresh engines?

I realise it should be a mineral oil not synthetic, but just wondered if there is any bike engine specific running oil that should be used?

Thanks

Martin

cheapest least sexy mineral you can get in the right grade. gotta bed them rings in.

run it for a morning (don't spank it and make sure you play nice with temps)then throw it away along with the filter of course.

Thanks JP.

It will need to be run in on the rolling road during mapping so will be 'spanked' a bit, had intended to change oil and filter after that anyway before testing. Is that bike engine specific oil or just general motor oil?

Don't forget the power seating.

ooohh. I hated doing that to my lovely busa motor. even if Jon did build it up slowly, its still a harsh way to bed it in if you ask my totally un-informed opinion. watch those oil temps!

Don't forget that it needs to be BIKE mineral oil not car (because of the integral gearbox). When I couldn't get any bike mineral oil one day, Ted did let me use bike semi-synthetic - we just had to extend the run-in period.

I totally agree.

Fine if you've bought a couple of hours on the RR and have got a chap who knows how to bed in and power seat a motorcycle engine (as such as Powertec do), if not IMHO best to put it on a general mapping, put a couple of non-spanking hours under it's wheels on mineral oil using no more than 80% revs, power seating etc, change oil (to normal oil), oil filter and fuel filter, then do the fine mapping on the RR.

It's kind of against my 'religion' to spank any engine running on mineral oil - it doesn't have the required viscosity range for bedding and 100% caning.

Sounds like I am going to need semi-synthetic for this one, running at a track on a base map is not really an option as this is likely to do more harm than good and will need to give it some beans on the rollers at some point anyway. This is going to be a very harsh application so bedding rings in is not really going to be a problem whistle
I intend to do the fine tuning at the track after the rolling road session.
