Make sure you 'relive' these road car parts (ream them out with a dremel too or similar) before using them in an SR4. Or they may overheat/fail. I think new parts were good for a 20min race, that was all. Relieved parts would do a 40 min race in hot conditions no sweat!

Can you describe exactly what I should do and explain a little further? The failure due to overheating after about 20 mins was exactly what happened to my old set that broke.

Cheers

I'm guessing it's the outer you're having trouble with... they suffer from heat transfer from the brakes, latter SR4 models incorporated rear brake ducting, but this will only delay the inevetable.

When you first get the joint, you will notice it's quite stiff and difficult to move.
First of all dismantle the joint, (you might need to make a note of which side of the centre part faces the driveshaft). I'd do this over a tray, as the balls can have a mind of their own and clean off the grease with some kind of degreaser.
Then basically ream out any surface which the balls make contact with, the 6 grooves in the stub axle, the 6 grooves in the star shaped gear that attaches to the driveshaft, and the 6 openings in the cage. It shouldn't need much with a new band.
I use a dremel type tool with a sanding band similar to (http://www.dremeleurope.com/dremelocs-uk/Product.jsp;jsessionid=6F3A6E09261931F6AA685B318F0AA6FA?&ccat_id=510&prod_id=202) although i guess a similar abrasive band on an air tool would do.
Re-assemble the joint, (one ball at a time), the joint should feel much easier to move. (Almost 'clonky' when fitted to the shaft)
Dont forget to re-grease the joint before assembly, and slip a small tube (fire ext., or copper brake pipe) under where the CV boot wraps around the driveshaft and cable tie in place. This will allow the joint to 'breathe'.

The whole process just increases the tolerances in the joint, so when it heats up, it has more room to expand. As opposed to expanding, then locking up, causing your failure!
Hope this helps.

Hi beachbuggyman.

Something seems to be telling me I know/should know who you are but have forgotten? That said, I have trouble remembering where I live sometimes!

Anyway, if you're not already, howzabout joining The ROC even if you are now (temporarily or permanently) 'sans Radical'?

It's readily apparent to me that you've got precisely the firsthand & excellent practical knowledge and experience that will be invaluable and supremely useful to ROC Members.

Hope you'll decide to come on board; you'd be very welcome smile ROC likes Gurus!

ROC Founder Will's the one to ping an email to : radicaloc@googlemail.com

Mmmmn, LS7, Warrington, Rob, X-C?, amongst others, Laurence (L'A) knows ............. yes
