What's the recommended way of changing the oil on a dry sumped CS? Is it the same as on a wet sump engine? cheers Geoff ps while I'm asking newbie mechanical questions, where is the ecu located and is it a standard ZZR1100 item?

It's one of these on a SR4 http://www.dynatekuk.com/sport_bikes_dyna_2000.htm... and mounted on the bulkhead between passenger and engine, down with the battery. Fairly sure it's the same on a CS but a vague recollection it is mounted somewhere more reachable.

Yes it's one of those, it's in the cabin on the LHS on my car.

Ah, yes, I've seen that Dyna box, it's behind the driver's seat but on the engine side of the bulkhead, if you follow me. I though it was just an ignition module and there was a separate ecu, now I know better.

Any advice or tips on the dry sump oil change?

The dyna module is just the ignition. You are on carbs so don't have a full ECU as such.

With regard to the oil change. A couple of weeks ago I had the dry sump off mine. every time you take a pipe off, some more oil comes out. I would suggest the best bet is to drain the resevoir first using the drain plug at the bottom, then remove the oil filter. That should do the job reasonably thoroughly. With a dry sump it contains a heck of a lot of oil so even if some is left you will be diluting it fairly well.

On the oil change, just like Rustybin said; warm up engine thoroughly before you drain out the dry sump tank; that way it'll be as full as possible and nice and runny, then sump plug, then oil filter.

If you've got time to kill, go on and do the pipes; if you've got a life, leave it at that and have a glass or four of wine.

I can't see any obvious drain plug on the oil reservoir, do I have to remove the bolts, lift it up so I can get at the hose on the bottom, then remove that, is that what you meant? Also where is the oil filter located, I can't spot it? confused

The good news is I only ask these idiot-level questions once. rolleyes

You're going to have to get 'down and dirty'; undertray off, rear end up in the air a bit and do everything from under; taking off a rear wheel tends to help; our Busa SR4 has certainly got a plug at the bottom of the DST, but if your's doesn't a hose at the bottom will do; you'll see the sump plug and filter when you're down there; filter will be at the bottom towards front, same approximate place as all Jap Bike four cylinders are.

In terms of both the DST & Sump Plug; DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! Similarly the oil filter .............. it should have a jubillee clamp round it (or be wired) for added security.

Geoff, on my ZZR1100 dry sumped Clubsport, I usually drain the engine from the drain plug on the right hand side of the dry sump pan, it is the big blue one roughly in the middle of the side of the pan. It is a tapered thread. To drain the tank, I usually undo the pipe union at the base of the tank. I remove the pipe fitting, not the bit that screws into the tank itself. Then I usually take the filter out.

As Peter says. On the bottom of the sump you'll find a round plate with a bolt in the middle. Undo this, the filter is behind it.

Ah, I had already bought a standard (bike) ZZR1100 oil filter, am I going to need something different?

Normal ZZR1100 filter is fine.

All done, thanks for the advice as usual. Taking off the floor/diffuser was a pain as it had been riveted to the side pods, but I bolted it back on this time.

It took about 6L of oil to fill the dry sump system to 3/4 of the way up the reservoir tank, checked when the engine had warmed up again after the oil change, hope this sounds about right?
