Hi

Just found that my car doesnt seem to be charging, look at the hayabusa manual and it said remove the cover and check the coils on the generator, when i undid all the bolts holding the cover on engine oil started to come out !!

I imagine i have a seal leaking and it wreaked the generator ?

Anybody with any ideas ?, the car starts ok and runs, i have a trackday /ARDS booked for Wednesday and i dont want to miss it !!

Regards

Assuming they're untouched between being taken out of bikes and put into radicals, the Busa engines have an oil seal on the shaft of the rotor iirc, certainly sounds like it's gone as there shouldn't really be any oil there.

Cheers Stu, am i right in thinking that it is unlike a car and the bike engine will run ok as long as i keep the battery charged as its a generator not an alternator ?

Is it a job i can do in situ ?

I'm not sure what other electrics the radicals run, but engine wise generally you'll be fine as long as there's some juice in the battery. A lot of folks with trackday bikes run what's known as a 'total loss system' whereby there's no charging circuitry for the bike, just a battery (obviously you need some juice for the fuel system etc!). I suppose a quick way around it would be to arm yourself with a couple of spare batteries and just swap them out as and when you need to if you can't get it fixed properly in time.

I've no idea about how easy or difficult it is to do in situ as I've no experience of radicals, just perusing thanks to a mate who owns a clubsport getting me curious about buying one. Plenty of experience with taking bikes to bits though!

Hi Paul, i ran mine wih a charging fault a while back (2 seperate occassions) and eventually the car stops running!

the water pump and spark system do take a fair amount out of the battery.

these small batteries are small in reserve capacity.

be warned.

best way is to use a high capacity charger on the jump start connector every time you come back to the pits. that way yoo will give it a refresh on each pause. thats how i got past the problem and not loose the day

watch it trying to start it if its hot with low battery...they can kick back and the older motors didn't fair too well as a result.

There's a fuse in the charging circuit, check this as it's common fault for the fuse to work loose create a high resistance, get hot and burn out, it's usually an an in line jobbie in a rubber case near the battery.

It's part of a small harness that connects to the generator three pin plug, the voltage regulator and an earth connection

yep thats that happens to mine, but the relay can take a hammering as well and that goes high resistance across the contacts.

don't know about the oil in the generator and the effect that will have.

The generator runs in oil, thats normal so don't worry about that. Charging is either the fuse (and associated cabling) that Simon mentions, a duff generator or a duff rectifier (you can get pattern rectifier from your local m/bike shop for a lot less than OEM)

Found my problem, a well and truly frazzled in line fuse, changed the fuse and holder and alls good again.

Thanks for all your replies.

also put a tie wrap round the fuse holder.
