Need a new set of Avon's for my SR3 - last time I went to Brian Davies at Avon direct, I was told that was the cheapest option - I paid £720 inc VAT last July. Can you get them cheaper anywhere, or are there cheaper alternative brands ??
I would also be interesred in a set of used tyres as long as they have
50% + life left in them ?
BTW, wondered why my car was under-sterring so badly yesterday at Oulton only to find that the front left was down to the canvass (patch the size of a bowling ball) - clever boy !
Thanks
Ali

You won't get Avon tyres any cheaper than going to Brian at Avon only over choice would be Dunlops.

Thanks, are Dunlops any cheaper and how do they compare in terms of grip/durability ?

Price not sure have a look at radical web site for a rough idea, I had a prosport on Avon and now have a PR6 on Dunlop
the new car does have more grip but that could be down to the car.

What are you using it for?

Another tyre choice would be Yokohama's, try talking to Mike Potter at Bridge Tyres.

Hi Simon, just using it for trakdays but do Yokohama make slicks ??
Also, I was looking at my tyres last night and my fronts have worn far quicker than the rears, is that normal ? I guess the fronts take more load under braking but wd have thought with the power going through the rears it would even that out ? Perhaps I have too much brake bias up front, any ideas because my last set wore evenly front to back.

It was fine before Oulton so the understeer was down to the huge patch of canvass contacting the surface. Interested to know how other cars wear there tyres, is it even/consistent front and back or do fronts tend to wear quicker with steering and higher braking loads ?

Hi,

Yokohama would certainly be worth considering. We have two sets of them for our Clubsport. One for sprinting and one for racing.

Were cheaper than Avon and seem pretty good.

Cheers

Josh, as Yokos (A005?) are only available in 13" sizes that are way (a mile) different to the dimensions of Radical Dunlops, what sizes do you use on what width rims? Also, do you change sprockets to compensate? Are the A005s actually soft enough for sprinting? I've got the impression that most of the sprinters seem to use real sticky Avons, because the circuit based Radical Dunlops are too hard a compound for the very different demands of sprinting.

Our SR4 tends to wear the fronts out first - also due to predominant understeer. Having said that new Dunlops tend to compensate out the understeer for the first three or four races, then get progressively worse.

Hi Trevor,

The tyres seem to do fine. We have a set from Bridge tyres for sprinting and one for racing. Both compounds are very good.

In terms of gearing, the Yokos dont have such a large side wall, so generally we change the sprocket by one tooth from the recommended list.

Good to meet you at Silverstone
