I know these are near to useless when they are working but all the same, where should i start to look for the fault?

bulb, connection?

Yep, in that order, then fuse and then (if it's the fuse and it 'pops again') go on to check the integrity of the wiring with a circuit tester - think it likely to be the connection - wiring goes hard and the vibes do the rest - don't assume that because the wiring seems to be attached to the spade/shovel connector that it's OK - a tang grips the wrap but the actual trapped wires may well have broken i.e. looks OK, but it isn't

If all else fails, then just ignore it and rely on putting in what you know you'll need plus a decent bit more.
