Hi all, I am in the midst of fitting a longer gear ratio for my SR3 for Spa next month. I have managed to release the front retaining nut for the smaller ratio but I can't get the 42mm retaining nut off the rear cog (note that I realise it is an opposite thread).

I have wound an air gun upto 230PSI after heating the nut up with a heat gun but that won't even budge it. Does anyone have any miraculous ways/tips of removing these nuts - any help appreciated ?
Cheers
Ali

Time for Confucian Variations of the Birmingham Screwdriver?; meaning try that big hammer again, but this time surprise the beggar!

1) Have a go, fail, say "oh borrocks to it", appear like you've given up, appear to walk away, then spin round a give a right bloody good whack when it's least expecting it. Strange, but it often seems to work!

2) The more sophisticated version of surprising the beggar; plenty of release fluid, have a cuppa, then another, then give it a good few whacks in the tightening up direction, then a good firm whack in the untightening direction.

3) If space allows, refine approach two with a proper impact driver on the untightening direction bit.

Thanks, particularly like option 1, v.funny !! You mention release fluid, I have sprayed it with WD40 over the past few evenings whilst waiting for the 42mm socket (at a mere £28) to turn up. A night of happy whacking ahead !
After all this, I'd better get another 8-10mph up the kemmel straight, fed up with pesky GT3's overtaking me up there and then having to re-take them through the twisty bits,,,,,!

They say (they lie of course) that you only need two things in a tool kit; duck tape if it moves and normally it shouldn't and WD40 if it doesn't move and normally it should: I'd add PlusGas (or similar, but TBH, like WD40, the original is best) to that for things that need to be moved but normally wouldn't. IMHO, it invisibly creeps along threads and washes out little bits of debris in a much more intensive and better way than the otherwise excellent WD40 does.

The final solution scenario (hopefully not to prove necessary!) is of course the infamous Nut Splitter ........... you'll probably know what that feels like after your night of happy whacking! I could make a crack about that being a lot of money for not that much of a hole, but I won't.

Then, Go Wave Bye Bye To Em Porkers

A rotary cut off saw. Flippin lively as it name suggests. The heat that it generates combined with it's cutting, usually does the job.

Dario, with the standard ratio I never saw more than 135 on my speedo (that's just before hitting the first red change-up light (which I always try to avoid as I've already blown one engine on my first ever trackday, ouch!). Radical quote 145 for that standard 3.071 ratio but I don't see how that is poss (maybe if you hit the limiter I guess). I think the 2.971 gives 153mph as top speed but again that's prob on the limiter so if I can squeeze 145 out of it, I'll be happy with that. See you at Spa, what colour's your car, I presume it's an DR3 ?
Cheers

Alistair i blew my first SR3 engine on my second track day and it was Spa. the cam chain snapped, so i too keep out of the red when ever possible. in fact i just feather the throttle..... after all its not racing is it!

dont forget that if you bks up the quaife unit there will be no track day in Spa if you cant repair it in time!

see you there! come to think of it it might be close to 135mph!
