Those of you guys with racing experience on the Dunlop Radical slick tyres could you give me any info as to how many heat cycle's you think the tyre can have from new without loosing too much of there performance please?

My original set of tyres still looked pretty good after what I guess was about 20 or so cycles, but not having much of idea about the car I hadn't realized they had no grip left, this I only discovered upon treating the car to a new set of tyres that totally transformed the car.

I think if you were at the back of the grid you'd have more response..... lol!

If its any use the Avons used to do about 6-8 heat cycles before performance started to drop off

Its like that already is it...........They seemed such a nice bunch of guys too!!!

Cheers Rob, it feels like the set I bought last September are pretty shot now after about 12 heat cycles, where do you stand on the hot air gun & scraper clean up technique? Loads of the Radical cup guys do it & the tyres do look nice & free of accumulated crap with new rubber exposed, but surely the heat involved cycles the tyre again?

biggrin there are no friends in motorsport .. lol!

Heat guns, yup good for cleaning up the tyres and removing small flat spots. Not sure what effect they have on the life of the tyre though.

Hi FastD. If they are anything like me, possibly still on Cloud 9 and as high as a kite after ROC's IT on Wednesday ......... slowly returning to the real world. For me, it was a bit like having all your birthdays in one go. Utterly and completely brilliant ....fantastic atmosphere.... make darn sure you are at the next one.

I know W @ ROC has latched on to it ...... and has sought very authorative advice (from a top R driver who happens not to compete with you) in response to your original Q, so watch out for his post on this thread.

I'll be interested to see what Rob says about tyre shaving; watched a real expert doing it at Rock - work of art, impressive.

BTW, how did Brands go? VG I hope.

Hi Trevor, pleased the ROC day was such a success for you & Will after all the effort.

In Hill climbing tyre maintenance was absolutely imperative for a good time, we used a surform to remove build up of rubber & debris with no additional heat cycle, but its bloody hard work by hand!

The Brands 750 was hard work Trev, there was a Speads car competing, which to be honest looked a faster car than mine in the quicker corners.

However I just got the pole by a nats knacker, & won both races by the slenderest of margins, of I think 0.57secs in one & 0.90 secs in the other! (Out of interest, had one crap start 4th at the first corner & one good one leading at the first corner, so hopefully those are getting better!)

Cheers Darren ..... ROC IT t'was a very great day.

Sounds like you certainly had your work cut out, but still succeeded as is fast becoming expected of you. Perhaps that the Rockingham back of grid to second stood you in good stead for one of them? Anyway, very well done mate.

Will's shortly going to post that advice to your personal email .... leave it to you to decide what to post/pass on here .... your call as to how much you reward that resultant (but probably innocent) silence!

Regards Meantime biggrin

Hi Guys,

I have always found the Radical Dunlop tyres to be very good. They give their maximum in the first heat cycle usually for about 5 or 6 laps. Then if you let them cool they maintain a very consistent level to grip for about another 40-50 laps (or about 7 to 10 heat cycles) This obviously varies from car to car. A well set up SR3 or PR6 will be much easier on its tyres than the heavier SR8. After this you can still use them for a lot longer especially if you are just having fun on trackdays. For racing purposes you will find it worth replacing them after 10-15 heat cycles.

A good tip to make them last longer is not to go out and go as hard as you can on them straightaway during the first heat cycle. If you warm them up gradually and go easy on them for the first couple of laps you will find they maintain performance longer than if you just go out and hammer them on the first timed lap in qualifying.

Well after Cadwell I recon I can answer my own question now.

Seemed to get around 12 heat cycles at reasonable pace on that last set of tyres, then down hill all the way after .........
Hamlet if you want them for best give me a call!!!!
