Prosport/SR4/ which one ?
Discussion
I've been looking at several radical's for use as a track day car/Hillclimbs and eventually getting in to racing.
If you take the same engine as fitted ie 1300 busa which ultimately is the quickest ?
Is the aero of the SR4 more advanced than the earlier prosport enough to offset any weight differences. I noticed that several SR4 seem to have a high downforce kit fitted, how much difference does this make ?
Thanks
Dave

There might well be a later version of this, but might this be a useful starting point? >

Remebering that most Trackday Radicals are capable of being piloted quicker than the pilot actually in charge on the day, with a driver of equal and advanced competence, compared to non HD, having HD on an SR4 will make it appreciably quicker over a full lap, gains round corners more than offsetting any slight loss of straightline speed.
As always, it's 'horses for courses'; when I met him about 18 months ago, Mick Hyde thought the PR06 would probably be the best of all choice for hill climbing, where it's compactness and central driving position (in context of all Radicals being 'closed wheel') must be advantageous.
However, if you want to do trackdays, then most want two seats which usually means converted Prosport, SR4 or SR3 and yes if you can afford to hire a race team and have bottomless pockets, the SR8. The relative two person merits of the first three have been more than well covered in other earlier posts.
If you want to do passengered Trackdays and are serious about solo hill-climbing, providing the two of you fit, it seems to me from Radicals that have had notable success in hill-climbing that the SR4 is the best choice, the SR3's extra dimensions being an appreciable disadvantage with only 14 or so or less feet width of hill-climb track to play with/get wrong.

If you are able to fly solo (from my point of view at least, more than one pair of hands is needed with any Radical at something like a Trackday, helper's reward usually being riding shotgun or sharing piloting) then I think you're right; better still, if you've got the dosh, go for a PR06.
That said, as we seem to be not far apart (the car and I are in Stourbridge), if you want to have a good look at / sit in an SR4, you'd be more than welcome to come round and have a look at ours. BTW, just like BertBert, ours is not for sale, we love it way too much. If so, ping me an email and I'll give you my mobile.
Either way, I hope you buy a well looked after Radical of some type. They are simply fantastic..........probably the best decision you will ever make.

Trevor (Splitpin) is glowing because he spent all day Tuesday blasting round Silverstone GP circuit and he's still high on the buzz. Get yourself into a Radical and you'll see what we mean.
Good luck, Nick
T'is true what Nick says (particularly now I'm through the totally knackered afterwards phase!), but as Nick knows and endorses, what I said about tracking a Radical is 100% true. I think I once read something like it's the ideal car for the bloke who has mastered and is getting rather bored with a GT3RS to move up / on to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Good luck, Nick

Dave, you need a Prosport/PR6 for racing & a SR4/SR3 for trackdays in an ideal world!
With the same driver, from my experience thus far I think it basically works out that to be as fast in a SR4 as a Prosport/PR6 you need to have a fully tuned engine relative to a standard one.
I could do with a quiet weekend, so I think I'll suggest that (a PR6 to join the SR4) to her indoors tonight; they always (think they) 'punish' us by sending us to Coventry! Thats the conclusion i've come too, i'm just itching to get the 1600cc busa motor, put into another car. With the same driver, from my experience thus far I think it basically works out that to be as fast in a SR4 as a Prosport/PR6 you need to have a fully tuned engine relative to a standard one.
It's all your fault anyway for telling me how much fun racing is !!!

Get the wife involved and all will be sweetness.
I'm lucky my wife and daughter love motorsport and are involved for many many years.
Few ladies realise that it can be fun for them too rather than a burden.
Need to stike a balance and a holiday of good choice works wonders.
Good luck on the hills.
I've done it for 18 years now and it realy does suit the family spirit.
Try www.hdlcc.com for starters, my local hillclimb.

Dave's no stranger to the Hills as a regular competitor over a number of years in a Caterham 7 & more lately in a Force PC. I believe the sly old fox may still have a couple of National records to his name in the Caterham!
Dave keep an eye out for a tuned Prosport at the right money, as they do come up from time to time.
