Are you sure about the history? Quite a lot of cars get sold when they have "just had a rebuild" and it turns out that the rebuild was not quite what it seemed to be or the definition of "just had a" seems to go astray.

Have you done a compression test? comparing with/without oil down the bores?

I would suspect a ring problem for the oil smoke.

Is the starting issue poss a fueling problem rather than an oil one? What are the plugs like when you take them out? Oily, sooty, petrol-wet?
