SR3 Silencer needed !!!???
Discussion
We have just fitted the Radical "quiet" silencer to our SR3. A static test with our Maplins noise meter gave 103db at 8,000 rpm, 1/2 metre at 45 degrees, so it seems to work. However it needed a fair amount of effort to make it fit as it contacted the rear subframe in 2 places (it is much wider than the race silencer) - so some panel bashing (of the silencer) was required. We have yet to try it on track but as it is not straight through we will presumably suffer some power loss, which would not matter on a track day. It is expensive for a silencer, however.
I'm kind of surprised (read concerned) that it had to be cleared / adjusted / whacked to fit; the latter can't do it any good at all.
If that is a genuine Radical quiet silencer made by them to fit an SR3 (made by them). if I had had to do that I would certainly be having, shall we just say 'a bit of a chat' PDQ with Radical.

I had the rear support frame on my clubsport remade over the winter as it was a bit bashed about. I didn't realise that one of the "modifications" was deliberate to make the quiet silencer fit. I had to remodify it!
BTW I am contemplating a new quiet silncer from Radical. That'll mean mine will be spare. I think it's the one for the SR3. It's not done too many outings, just not as quiet as the new quiet one.
How much do you have in mind to pay for one?

Hi Bert, how many outings would you say it has done from new because as long as it is in good nick and therefore will probably get me below the 105db limits on most tracks, that coud be ok. I think mine is just completely shot and I can't really be bothered to mess around re-packing it. Let me know ?

I would agree that having to modify the silencer if it is sold for the SR3 is unacceptable. However, what started as a very minor mod to clear one of the tubes of the rear subframe escalated into more and more modification as it was made to fit in one area and then didn't in another. After the first minor mod I felt that I couldn't really return it to Radical. I still cannot see how Radical could sell it for the SR3 when they had obviously not tried fitting it to one - presumably it was fitted to another model (SR4?). Anyway it does appear to work and the figure of 103db was not obtained under ideal conditions as the rear bodywork was off and the car was just inside the garage. Under the same conditions, a nearly new race silencer gave 108db. If that is a genuine Radical quiet silencer made by them to fit an SR3 (made by them). if I had had to do that I would certainly be having, shall we just say 'a bit of a chat' PDQ with Radical.

PRob done about 8-10 days in all. Where are you? I (and it) are in epsom.BErt
depends on revs! With it brand new, I went to Combe. The noise tester there is not easily fooled and wanted 3 yellows. 103 ish and a trip home. Everywhere else I have been (inc goodwood 'noisy' day) I have done 1 yellow and been way down (98-100). Not fallen over the drive-by tests either at goodwood or donny.
I'll find out the price of the new quiet, quiet box and I'll see if I can afford to change.

That '103 ish and a trip home' has put doubt back in my mind again. I bought the SR3 extra super dooper cost a fortune squeeze it into the rear subframe Radical quiet silencer and it gives about 101 / 102.I'll find out the price of the new quiet, quiet box and I'll see if I can afford to change.

I've discussed it a couple of times with Combe office now because the published literature states:
Car trackday - 4,500 rpm, 100dB, no mention of bike engined.
Saturday (usually themed) Action Day - this does mention bike engined cars and it's 75% of redline, 105dB.
Bike trackday - 75% of redline and 105dB.
Their response to pushing them about a bike engined car on a car trackday was that they test you as though you are a bike so the limit is 105dB not 100dB
Can anybody confirm what limit the noise test guy uses on a car trackday from first hand experience please?
I was working at sstone today on a track day there was a SR3 that drove past me in the pits don't know what exhaust it had fitted but had coming out of it another pipe with two very small silencers or similar one pointing to the left and one to the right looked like a neat job and can only put the noise meter near one or the other!!!!!!!!
