Working on the rad at home, I don't have a good way of getting it up in the air and I am fed up with doing it on my knees(!).

Does anyone have any techniques or ideas for getting it up into the air? I was thinking of investigating car lifts, but that seems a bit ott somehow!

I had a dirty great RSJ installed in my new garage along with a integrated 1/2ton beam trolley/chainblock & just pick the whole thing up via the rollbar.

Use an engine hoist with webbing round chassis frames? Hoists can be bought for under a £100 on ebay.

As Nick says, engine hoist like this will do the job http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/range/guid/C94AD...

I use an electric hoist bolted through two ceiling beams.

And then set it on metal stands where it stays most of the time and makes it easy to work on.

Forgot to say, tried the Viagra and it works in a limited way - only able to lift up an end or side at one time!!

A friend of mine welded them up, they're 24" tall x 30" wide. Seems to be about the perfect height. Using a rolling mechanics stool I can comfortably sit and work on suspension/brakes. I can roll under the car on a creeper to clean and service under the engine...but I can still reach the higher stuff without any issues.

You can either drop an engine in from the top of drop one out down the bottom at this height too.

My PR6 weighed in at 486.5kg with 20ltrs of fuel on board, ready to race. Somewhat above the quoted minimum of 418kg!

couldn't find any suitable stands in the net (could only find Demon Thieves with some at £100 ea) so I have had some made. Need to get on and do my winter works now (suspension and brake overhaul and engine coolant leak diagnosis).

BertBert, I see from your other posts that you are happily ripping your car to pieces. Did you lift your car with a winch bolted to the ceiling as pictured above or with an engine crane?

If not the latter has anybody managed to do this? By engine crane I mean something like this http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...

Nick, I used an engine hoist like the one in the link. It's not a great process, but it worked! The core problem is getting the hoist under the car. It went like this...

1 lift the front with the quicklift
2 get hoist under the front (with one 'leg' through the quick lift IYSWIM
3 lift front to chassis stand level and put chassi stand under front.
4 very carefully move the hoist to the middle and lift on the rollbar to get two axle stands under the rear.
5 lower on to stands and reposition hoist at the rear
6 lift the rear and put the rear chassis stand under

I am planning to get an RSJ retrofitted after I have got the car done and out to use the hoist method next time!

I do have somne pics of of the process if it helps!

Thanks BertBert, sounds understandable. Some pictures would be helpful if not too much of a problem. I'll PM you my email address in a minute if it's easier than posting them on here.
