...was my CS engine refresh after stripping a gear at Brands. I think the whole thing was pretty worn (needed a new casing), but £4600?
Ouch.

Hi,

If an engine has suffered huge damage, sometimes its more cost effective to start a re-build with another engine.

Were you kept aware of costs at all times?

Cheers

Yes, I was reasonably aware. It crept a little, although that was prob the dyno charge and the courier back. It just all adds up with VAT being added!

That's a hell of alot for a motor like that, but I guess they have high overheads! Did you have to have a Powertec motor for a specific race class or could it of been done elsewhere? (Mistral Performance are great, have done loads of bike engines for me)

I kind of wanted to keep it fully radical/powertec to have the option of doing the powertec challenge next year. Also once it was out and in bits to get a quote, it was easier to carry on than chuck it away and source ano engine.

Would love to see the itemised bill to see what wasn't changed. When my old clubsport engine dropped two cogs it cost me £300 (which included buying a second hand bottom end)

Bert you can still do the Powertec challenge with an engine thats not Powertec, you just have to go into the invitation class.

I thought from talking to Amanda earlier in the season that the engines had to be powertec sealed.

They are meant to be for running in the correct classes, but as I say if you have a none powertec motor you all get lumped together in the invitation class.

You may be up against a 1500cc tuned to the nuts motor with your 1100cc engine if it was built elsewhere as far as the results are concerned. But factualy you will know that if you beat another 1100cc engined car of the same type it was down to you!

I compeated against an SR4 with a Powertec stage 3 tuned 1300 Busa, with my standard motor in the PR6 losing next to nothing down the straights!

Rumour has it the Powertec Christmas party is now being moved from the Dog & Duck to somewhere much more fancy. With better strippers too...

Sorry to hear that one Bert, let's hope you get a lot of hours out of it before another rebuild. Anybody know what's a typical rebuild from somewhere like Mistral for a 1200 SR4 engine?

Hi,

We have had motorcycle engines rebuilt by different companies. From memory Powertec charge £750 labour plus whatever parts are worn out or broken.

The difference is, if all is not well after the rebuild.

We bought a 'busa engine for our SR4 from another well known company. They stripped it and modified it to suit our car. The first time the car was driven, it showed up several gearbox problems. We contacted the said company and it soon became apparent that we were on our own. The engine was removed and returned to them, they could find nothing wrong. For this work we were given an invoice!

The unit was refitted back into the car and tested again, the problems were still no better.

During conversations with engine supplier we were reminded several times that there was no warranty on competition engines, even though the unit was supplied and inspected by them. After many letters and unpleasentness we removed the engine again and sent it to Powertec. They quite quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it for a nominal sum. This saga wiped out our 2005 season.

We have no connection with Powertec whatsoever, just satisfied customers.

Our engine refresh this year was carried out by them, and the car has not missed a beat all year.

You only get what you pay for!

Regards

Darcy

yep, just been looking at the bill.
800(+vat) for the engine labour and a list of parts as long as yer arm.
I too figure that it will be a top notch long lasting job!

So that's a fixed charge for labour regardless of £800? Can't really argue with that, 125cc gearbox kart and gearbox rebuild used to cost about half that in labour. Good to hear the other points of view, certainly made me think when you consider the warranty that is offered. Any one used AB performance or extreme for ZZR engines?

Nick997.... AB Performance is a top bloke (Andy Bates), builds countless engines for RGB. I would avoid Extreme Engines like the plague.

See my previous post!
