Birkett 6 Hours - Clubsport Team
Discussion
Shaun, Graham: Thanks for your replies re Birkett 6 Hours.
All: I've just spoken to Robin Knight at 750MC, who's given me some feedback; entry fee £950 per team, 4 to 6 cars per team (means entry per car varies between £158 and £238 approx.), 50 teams permitted, 8 teams have entered so far - places are being filled quite quickly, hence we need to respond quickly.
Any other takers?
I'm happy to coordinate an entry - please register your interest with contact details per email.

Rob: Regarding number of cars and drivers; as I understand it, for the purposes of the Birkett, a team consists of a number of drivers, each with his or her own car, not four or more drivers all sharing the same car – not sure what the regs say about multiple drivers sharing a car
Tony: Regarding “What Cars are Allowed”, I believe its pretty much anything goes as long as it’s got closed wheels. To be honest, I was hoping to get a team of Clubsports together, simply ‘cos they’d be reasonably well matched (and generally, rather less quick than Propsorts/SR3s). That said, I wouldn’t want to exclude anyone. Perhaps if there’s sufficient interest from Prosport/SR3 drivers we could form a second team? Otherwise lump all manner of Radicals together.

Just spoken to Robin Knight at 750MC - Regs and entry form for Birkett is supposed to be on 750MC web site, but it aint! - should be put on in the next couple of days. Meantime, he sent me a .pdf copy. Key points are
- Venue is Silverstone National (Club) Circuit
- Team comprises 4/6 drivers/cars
- Need to be member of 750MC or one of the invited clubs (long list)
- Classes: Road going up to 1600 and Over 1600, Sports Racers up to 1600 and over 1600, and Pre 1950!
- Each driver to do 3 laps to qualify
- Preference given to teams comprising same make or type of car, to make event "more intelligable to the spectator"
- Each driver to declare best Silverstone lap time (to establish team handicap), failing which best lap time at another circuit, failing which a fast lap time for the type of car will be assigned
- Teams are awarded a handicap, meaning a number of laps credited at the start
- Winning team is the one covering max number of laps including laps credited
- Each team must have a team manager to coordinate car change-overs
So, now then, any more takers? Still need more Clubsports to make an All-Clubsport team, or do we go with a mixed Radical team. Thoughts?

BertBert said: [Is the National the triangle with 2 regular corners and one with a bit of a left right?]
Response: Yup, that's the one, not forgetting the flat-out left hand kink that is Maggots before the tight right-hander that is Becketts. The "bit of a left right" is Brooklands (fairly fast left) followed by Luffield (slowish 180 right).
It'll be busy, with big speed difference between fastest and slowest cars, so probably not too much opportunity to get bored!

Guys,
I took part in the Birkett for the first time last year and I couldn't recommend a more enjoyable race. Manic would probably be the best word to describe it. When you're on circuit you just don't have time to rest - the number of cars all going different speeds is something you just have to experience.
You may want to check with Robin Knight about entering Radicals though, as I did hear that there is a limit to the lap times this year - between 60 and 90 seconds. Seeing that RGB cars do 62s laps I would imagine Radicals to be well under 60s. Probably worth checking out before organising a team, hopefully I'm wrong.
Take a look at the following video to see what it was like from my point of view:
