Hopefully somebody will be able to shed some light on this. On my 1100 Clubsport running Dyna Coils not sure which ignition system a ‘black box’ in one of the side pods. I’m not getting any spark on cylinders 2 and 3 (These share the same coil). When swapping coils 1,4 to 2,3 the problem stays with 2 &3 thereby eliminating the coil! Also connecting the feed wires from 1,4 to 2,3 makes 2,3 work! When testing the feed both sides of the coil have power when tested using a multimeter to earth.

How should I be testing the coils?
How is this wired to the ‘black box’? Can I temporally replace these wires to test?
Any other ideas?

Thanks. Colin

The coils should have continuity in both the primary and secondary windings, with the resistance for each in a range specified by the manufacturer. It'll be quite low for the primary (0.1-0.2 Ohms) and a few K Ohms for the secondary. Am I right in thinking the 1100 used a Honda Blackbird engine? If so you ought to be able to get the appropriate figures from a Haynes manual. However, as you say swapping the coil packs results in no change to the behaviour, the most likely cause is a fault else where in your wiring loom. Again the Haynes manual would be able to provide you with a wiring diagram, although whether this is an exact match in the Radical I've no idea. A favourite with bikes is a wire in the loom rubbing against the frame, the wire loses it's insulation and an intermittent short develops. Perhaps a similar thing could be occuring here.

Good luck,

Steve.

Whenever we have had similar problems we have found that changing the Ignitor Box (black one as the post for ebay) has done the trick.
These seem to be resonably fragile in the Radical install/environment.

So much so that we carry two spares with us !

x-post from the Radical forum -

I've got a clubsport wiring diagram here, if you drop me a mail I'll send it over.

Gut feeling is if its not the wiring to the coils from the ignition unit then the unit itself has died

Thanks to all for the help. Further investigation last night reviled the CDI Unit hidden behind the battery and that the connector was not quite seated correctly. Once pushed firmly home, it started and ran perfectly!

This does however raise the question as to what the electronic trickery hidden in the side pod does. It’s in what looks like a maplin’s silver box and contains a couple of chips and a big heat sink. In my case with a revision number of 3 and a date March 2004. Anybody any ideas?

Colin.

Hi - the diecast box in the left hand sidepod is the control box for the electric reverse.
