Clutchless changes - good idea?
Discussion
when I drive my clubsport, I always use the clutch both up and down the box. A good friend of mine (and a far better driver than me) suggested that clutchless up-changes are perfectly ok and a good thing to do.
Does anyone have any views on whether it's a good idea or whether it has a gearbox-breakingly bad affect?
Thanks
Graham

I read your post a couple of times Graham to make sure you had the emphasis on *up* changes!
I was told by a gearbox designer that the best/least stressful way of changing up on a sequential box was to do exactly that i.e. no clutch. The way it was described to me was to judge the revs correctly, pull back slightly on the lever and when the pre-loading was right then a slight lift on the accelerator would cause the upchange to click home. Must admit I'm not at that stage of competence yet...

Not recommended to change down the box with no clutch unless you have a padle shift system that blips the throttle during the downshift. You have a lot more control of the car using the clutch on a downshift imho. Upshifts as mentioned above are fine, its a straight cut gearbox so long as follow the method above it'll be fine.
