Radical SR8 to smash 'Ring record?

We can do it in under seven minutes, claims director

With the launch of its SR8 track monster, Radical has made it its mission to circulate round the Nurburgring in under seven minutes, according to today's Autocar.

The 383bhp track car will, if successful, reclaim the record which Radical grabbed last year with the SR3's 7 minutes 19 seconds. Right now though, the record is in the hands of a privately-owned Donkervoort two-seater with 7 minutes 18 seconds.

Radical director Mick Hyde said that he'd studied the video of the SR3's lap and while he said it was a great lap, "it wasn’t perfect". Hyde said that the SR8 would go faster, and that he was confident that the SR8 could smash the seven minute barrier.

Surely Wahlter Rohrl (is that how you spell it?) has done a sub 7 min time in some porsche or another. For the record, my best was 7.33 in my Festiva - actually it was playing Project Gotham driving a Zonda C12S. Clearly I need to get real car, a real life and a ticket to the fatherland...

Who cares about NuremBORing?
Wouldnt they be better off trying to break lap records in the UK??

Surely they could then compare their so called superquick track car with current lap record holders who carry some clout.

For a car that is estimated to cost over 70k to buy and then as much as another 70k to race (as many believe) it had better be quick.

If you'd had your eyes open you might have realised the SR3 has already set a number of UK lap records so it doesn't take Einstein to work out the SR8 can, and surely will, better those times in due course.

Why can't people simply congratulate others for doing a good job rather than bitching about it!

Sure it costs a lot. Some people prefer backpacking, some don't. What's your problem.

I think they have to be congratulated on being slightly barmy in taking on el fatherlanders best machinery.

I have always admired (along with Atom) the slightly barking attitude of sticking a powerful engine in a go-kart light chassis. I wouldn't buy one, but who cares, some people do and long may they continue to be as English as you can possibly get!

More people than you might be willing to admit.

No. The whole point of testing a car at the 'ring is that it is a very good test of a car's all-round ability, as it has some very bumpy bits, a couple of top speed bits and a few smooth bits. It's 14 miles long, so it gives a much better testing ground for the development of a car than a 2 mile 10 corner UK track.

Bear in mind that the circuit is used on a daily bases by most European car manufacturers for suspension and dynamics development.

You obviously don't know what other road legal cars have tried the record.

I wouldn't expect it to be slow.

Good luck to them.

With the best pilot available they can hold the record for a long time. This will be on the next Corporate DVD off course . . . www.radicalmotorsport.com/news_folder/dvd2005/sr8.php

Will the record attempt be again carried out by a certain member of this parish?

Sorry, but running the SR8 at the 'ring' is simply a PR stunt and I suppose fair play to that, if thats your thing.

We'll see how quick they are at the opening round of the SR8 championship at Brands in April. Anyone know how many they will be able to make by then?

By the sounds of it, LMES would be the next logical step for such development.

I'm sure our Radical will smash the ring record, although those cheating huns won't allow the record to stand.

lets see, i recon the vast majority of their prospective customer base would be interested

i guess guess also because they will be looking to break the ROAD car record round the ring and no-one really knows or cares about road car records round uk tracks.

good luck to them. lets hope this time they dont give the sausages any reason to dispute their record !

I don't think anyone is pretending it isn't a PR stunt. They need all the exposure they can get. I've never driven a Radical and have no particular urge to, but if they're going for a record then they get my vote. "He who dares" and all that.

I suspect that these times would have got on the grid for the last German Grand Prix (1976) at the Nurburgring - when pole was 7 min 6.5 sec (set by James Hunt in a McLaren M23 if anyone's interested)

Cheaper than buying an old F1 car!!

You are a very wise man . . . I guess the one to do the Ring in the SR8 must be a fool . . .
