Today I've have my sprocket shaved.

Some karting guys told me that this could be a problem from the chain.

Thanks to LCM who left another sprocket in the parts box of Casper I was able to replace it but now I question if I should take a look on the chain or others.

What condition are the gearbox output shaft splines though?

I was wondering the exact same thing - if they're fine, that output shaft is clearly worth keeping - it's definitely a good 'un yikes

How tight do you do the sprocket nut up? I think it is meant to be 80 ft/lbs (with tab washer) and provided the sprocket splines are a very good fit on the output shaft splines then the splines shouldn't be able to fret. I expect this has worn over a period of time until not enough of the sprocket splines were left to take the load and that was when they sheared off.

I've lost the original nut a few races back and changed it with a normal big nylon nut size 30, could this be the cause?

More than likely, it has probably allowed the sprocket to move around and wear the splines, once the hardness of the sprocket has been worn through it wont take long to shear off as you have found. I might have some spare standard kwacker used nuts if yu can't get hold of any. You must use the tab washer too as it will come undone if you don't, even loctite won't be good enough!

Do you run the reverse motor?

I had a similar thing happen on my sr4 except the gearbox output splines were n a bad state afterwards.

I haven't got around to getting it fixed yet. Is this something that's going to cost me the earth ?

Thanks

I found the old "reverse" nut in the magic parts box and fitted it.

Does anyone has any experience on how to use a torque wrench with this nut ?

Doubtless 'dodges' will have been worked out, but this seems to be the proper real easy thingie? >

I made one that actually uses the flats (rather than the reverse drive dogs) out of some old angle iron and an old socket. You must use the tab wasker which locates on the shaft splines otherwise it will come undone!
