We had a little spin at Dony today and the driver didn't manage to get the clutch down in time. There was that whiiiz noise which I assume is the starter going backwards as it self destructs. Are there likely to be any other problems of an engine nature?

What's to be done with the starter? Rebuild? By whom? Or just a new one (after a lie down)?

Cheers
Bert

Extreme Engines make a billet starter cover and idler gear for the Busa which stops the unit self destructing if you have a spin.

Not cheap though.

This part is ok for the kickback, but not in case of a spin....
Look at the EXT-10035 Extreme Heavy Duty Starter Motor

The website doesn't say...how does it fix the problem?

BertBert I don't think Uncle Ted will allow you to use Extreme bits on his motors....

I was only thinking of it for when he wasn't watching JP. I don't need it myself as I don't spin of course biggrin It's only for when lesser members of the Bert clan are driving!

I was just curious really as to how it works.

Good to see you and chat last week JP.

HD starter motor is a very good peace of kit, elimates the risks from both kick back and spin.

Also makes starting hot/big bore engines a lot easier, without the added weight & ball ache of 24v systems and having to lug around 2x batteries in your car.

Also looks as if SBD have started selling the same motor (made by Brise).

Interesting, does that allow the "free" part to be free both ways (oo-er) as it would need to be?

I'm assuming it's free both ways until such time as it gets 'instructed by the starting circuit' to kick in and lock the spring-loaded spraggs?

I was just looking at the wiki entry about spragg clutches. They act as a one-way freewheel clutch. It's like a roller bearing but with figure of 8 spraggs rather than rollers. They lock up when the centre (I assume) is driven in one direction. For it to work, it has to not lock up when the outer is turned the opposite way (IYSWIM). A standard free wheel locks up when either the inner or the outer is turned (in opposite directions).

And yes just in case Uncle Ted is watching, I won't be using anything other than standard stuff on the engine. That'd be rude considering how helpful and responsive he's been!
