How does one go about doing this with the full Monty Aim Datalogging/Smarty Cam system as presently fitted by the big R?

Reason for asking is that I'm not sure (for example @ Mallory) that the track's beacon/transmitter is switched on/enlivened for testing. Certainly most people seemed to be using their own beacon linked to their own laptimers/onboard receiver stood on the pit wall last time I was there.

Can the Big R Aim System be activated with a handheld beacon 'dedicated' to the particular car?

Cheers

We use a little 12v aim beacon sat on the pit wall.

Ta very much, of the back of that, I found the required bit ........ see mention of narrow & wide track settings - you had any problems anywhere running it off just it's internal batteries?

Whilst surfing, I had a quick look at the MXL's Installation/User Guide - gasp, 100 pages, oh well that'll be something to take my mind of the 'what again!' turkey should needs be.

However almost like a magic magnet, after reading about 'obscuring', I seemed to be strangely drawn to bits about programmable rev counter show range and programmable shift lights .......... now that could be handy hehe

You can use the aim/smarty GPS (which is what I used at Mallory testing). Mind you taking your own beacon has got to be the better option.

Haven't ever tried always used the little external.
The other way is. To use the gps system with the aim and smarty setup. Requires no beacon to log the data. (useful for track days)

I use one of the cheapo beacon displays (T200 with radical branding) and every track I've been to has had an active beacon, sometimes I call the track just to make sure it'll be on beforehand.

You can also use GPS datalogging as suggested, just press the button once as you pass the start/finish and it'll remember that position and work from there. Or if you've used it before there or have the file loaded it'll do it automatically. Also most dataloggers have predictive lap timing so shows how much you are up or down on your best lap throughout the lap, very useful in my experience.

Cheers for the replies guys.

We had an LT1 (2000 laps, so that should be enough!) on the Prosport and used it in conjunction with the handheld pitwall 'beacon/transmitter' that it comes complete with. Most of the time, it was just fine, but just occassionally - mainly @ Mallory - it seemed to 'false', which I assumed to be the receiver on the car picking up someone else's handheld 'beacon'. Am I right in thinking that and how does one avoid that happening? When stuff used 'radio signals', a transmitter and a receiver were 'paired' to stop that happening, but the stuff nowadays is infra-red based isn't it?

As you can tell, I know diddly-squat about the technicalities of these things, so apologies.

It does vary system to system but with the Motec system (used with the GT car)the Beacon Receiver will only pick up the Beacon Transmitter with the matching code number and will ignore all other transmitters. Theses code numbers are programmable.

I presume you can switch off the link so you can all pick up one transmitter when you want to go that route?

There should be a blanking setting so that it will ignore all signals after the first one for a set period of time. That way you can set it to say 10 secs and it will ignore everything but the first beacon on the pitwall, but still capture a 50 odd second lap, or what ever a radical does!

Cheers.

Be mean with The Special Ones and give them a standard RPE - 1340 PR6 or 1475 RS and currently, you're talking VV low 44s, into the 43s on the right day yikes

Hi all , here are some laps of Mallory Park to use as refference including a 42.3 in an SR3 using the video vbox , i use the vbox all the time because it is so accurate and being gps no need for a beacon.

Sussed what it takes ....... minimise weight by having a small amount of oil in the engine & a nine speed box.

(watch the dash & the geartronics)
