Clubsport Dash Problems
Discussion
My Clubsport dashboard is playing up and wondered if anyone had similar issues and managed to fix it (and how they did it of course).
Basically the water temp gauge is reading approx 20 degrees too high (checked against infra red gauge and a separate ecu sensor as now running fuel injection). I have tried new sensors, replacing connectors etc, the oil temp one is also reading 7 degrees too high and have tried new sensors on that one as well.
I'm sure it used to read ok (water temp reads over 30 degrees when I haven't even started it up!)so wondered if anyone knows if anything inside the dash commonly fails?
Other than replacing the whole dash for something better, anyone got any ideas how to sort it?
Thanks
Martin

Just switched my ignition on without starting the engine a few minutes ago (stood in a nice warm garage on a not especially warm day) and the dash showed 29/30degC water temperature and 24degC oil temperature. Not sure why, but doesn't really surprise me that; I think it's from some vague recollection that cold water can come out of the tap from deep cool underground pipes in the warmer seasons at something like 15degC, so standing in and gathering heat via prolonged exposed to ambient temp hoses and tanks means it could easily be that? Unfortunately don't have a thermometer to hand.
Started the engine yesterday and (from knowing how long it takes to get a Rad's water and oil temps respectively up to 'OK to load' temps), the dash on ours seems to be working just fine.
Must remember to buy a thermometer when I'm next in Boots!

Mine is an error all the way up to full operating temperature, so when the ecu and infra red gauge say 80 degrees, the dashboard says 100 (and the red light on!).
It therefore does seem to be a case of 'Houston, we have a problem'.So said, always need to watch it with those infra-red gauges - use one as part of my work from time to time - i.e. you need to be measuring the actual water temperature not what it's 'contained' by. Containment of water by aluminium especially can give misleading information via an IRTG - mainly because gold and copper and magnesium and sodium are no-castable/expensive/unstable, that's why ally is used for heat sinks - for a metal, high thermal capacity and high thermal conductivity.
What's the dash telling you about oil temperature? Truth or Lies do you think?
Especially if the oil temp part of the dash seems to be OK, have you tried the obvious i.e. replacing the water temp sensor?
I have tried new sensors from R as a last resort(it really hurt getting them from there) and from elsewhere before that.
I have added another coolant sensor in the swirl pot for the ECU/injection system and that water temp ties up with the infra red gauge, hence I know the dashboard is telling porkies. Plus there was no way it was 33 degrees out here today!
I don't want to connect the ECU sensor to the dash incase the dash then c**ks up the ECU reading, if you see what I mean.
I think the oil temp is also quite a way out but not as bad as the water temp one.

Sounds like a mare....suggest you take up the offer of trying Tim's spare dash. or junk it totally and get a different type...can recommend the Race Technoogy Dash 3. Small but MUCH better than the Rad dash and there are usually used ones you can buy - just make sure if you buy a logger that yuo buy them a a pair...or be prepared to pay RT £100 for an unlock code..
I think I have fixed the water temp gauge issue, well at least it now reads the same as the oil temp gauge when it is cold which I can live with for now!
What I think the problem was/is that as the sensor uses a signal wire to sensor and earth wire to the tank, when I fitted the tank, I had pushed the tank inlet pipe hard against the flow restrictor which in turn was hard against the water outlet from the head. This produced a partial earth which was in conflict with the earth on the tank!
I am sure I had tried swapping the connection over but maybe there was another dodgy earth elsewhere as well.
Anyway, sorted now.
Cheers.
