Hi all,

We bought a 54 plate ZR (facelift) 1.4 three months ago - 30k on the clock and good history. Recently we went for a drive and all was fine. Stopped for gas, and as soon as we pulled out we could hear a helicopter above us. Turns out the chopper was our car. Wondering if anyone can help?

Basically, past 10mph, a bizarre fluttering/helicopter noise is coming from the front. We think on the right side but could be wrong. It does it when you cruise with your feet off, and also when you pull through the 2nd gear onwards. Our local VW mechanic who is a mate thinks it is the gearbox, or maybe cv joint? The RAC guy said he thought driveshaft going into the gearbox. Does anybody have any ideas? We have bought a 56 focus anyway and want to sell this as well as my TF. We just want to know whether to fix it and sell at full, or just sell with the fault at a reduced price. We don't actually know what the fault is which is the problem, and for a car that cost 2k we don't want to do 500 in labour and parts on something that may not fix it! Any help would be appreciated. The car drives and steers fine, but the fluttering noise is a concern and I don't want my other half driving it at all for safety.

Love the zr and my tf but boy does the Focus feel well-built, if a little boring!

Might be an idea to try the MG Rover forums, one section dedicated to ZRs.

Could anything and be something really simple .... needs someone to look closely at simple things before thinking gearbox and driveshafts. Has any work been done on the car recently by you or someone else? Even a routine service or MoT test? Something may have been disturbed.

My son had something like this happen on his Rover 620ti. Turns out one of the strap/clamps which secure the CV-Boot to the CV-Joint had worked loose and made a slapping noise with each rotation of the road wheel... which increased with road speed, not engine speed and only when steering straight ahead. Simple fix.

Many years ago, driving over a freshly tarred and gritted road, my wife in her brand new MG which started making an awful clicking noise with every revolution of the road wheel. Got a panic call from her ~ from a remote farmhouse ~ no mobile/cell phones back then. Sod's law. A stone from the freshly repaired road had wedged in the brake caliper and when I prised that out, all was well.
